A Message From the Department Head
Dear Psychology Students:
First of all, I hope that you and your families are safe and healthy in these troubled times. Social distancing has been challenging for everyone, including all of you, our Psychology students. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been isolated for eight weeks now, with more of the same ahead of us. The transition to fully online courses hasn’t been easy, but I’m very proud of the efforts of our faculty and especially our outstanding advisors who have gone the extra mile to offer their support and help you through the rough spots. I encourage you to contact them if you have concerns or issues. If they don’t know the answer directly, they will know who on campus to ask.
As we get closer to the end of the semester, many of you are wondering what comes next. When will the University of Arizona be back up and running in person, what will the fall semester look like, and how will it affect your studies? We don’t have all the answers to these questions yet, but on Thursday, April 30th, President Robbins announced his commitment to resuming in-person classes for the fall semester. He is committed to crafting a plan that will get us back to campus and at the same time assure that we can keep our students, faculty, and staff safe and healthy. The President has convened an outstanding taskforce of experts on COVID-19, public health, epidemiologists, immunologists, and medical response personnel, to create a comprehensive plan for this transition. I know many of these experts personally, and I have enormous confidence in their ability to carry out this complicated task. The first priority is, and will continue to be, the safety of our Wildcat family. Information is going out to all of you at a rapid pace via messages directly from President Robbins. You should also check regularly for information and updates on the UofA website https://www.arizona.edu/coronavirus-covid-19-information.
Finally, my sincere congratulations to our graduating seniors! I was very glad to hear that President Robbins has scheduled a special graduation event for all of you to be held on Friday, October 30, during Homecoming Weekend. The Psychology Department is also planning to have a special event on Saturday October 31st, a combination of congratulations for our graduating seniors and welcoming back our alums – of which you will be both! I hope and your families will join us. We’ll be sending out more information about the event in coming months.
In the meantime, take care of yourselves, support each other, and please stay in touch. I hope to see you all in person very soon.
Bear Down!
Lee Ryan, Professor and Head

Participants Needed
Mind Window
Do you ever wonder if there is some rhyme or reason to how you think? Just how often are your thoughts focused on troubling topics, the past, the future, or memories and imaginative thinking? A new mobile app, called Mind Window, helps users track the unique way they think and discover how these patterns of thought may affect their well-being.
Available as a free download for both Android and iOS mobile devices, Mind Window is part of a scientific research project developed by the Net Lab at the University of Arizona’s Psychology Department. The purpose of Mind Window is to identify patterns of thinking by asking questions about a user’s thoughts at random moments throughout their day-to-day life. Using the app not only allows individuals to better understand certain characteristics of their thinking over time, but also helps advance psychological research through the development of an extensive, international database of thoughts in everyday life.
If you’d like to participate in the project, download Mind Window from the Google Play store or the Apple App Store. For more information, including introductory ad tutorial videos, see the website at: http://www.MindWindowApp.com
