- rarely gets the chance to grow
- irresistible food for deer, goats, sheep, and other animals

- listed as endangered
- 2004 (10 remaining)
- take up to 14 years to reach reproductive maturity level
- largest and healthiest remaining of the population are in Devils River Basin of Val Verde County
