News and Views from the November 11, 2019 BOE Meeting

The November 11 Board of Education Meeting was held at Millburn Middle School.

  • Before the meeting, Dr. Burton and MMS Principal John Connolly gave an overview of the C&MP Referendum plans for the Middle School. Mr. Connolly also showcased the newly-renovated Media Center at the Middls School. (Thank you MMS PTO)

  • Technology Director, Evan Abramson, gave an overview of the Future Ready Schools program, and presented our Future Ready Teams and the banner that acknowledges achieving Bronze status for all of our schools.

Superintendent's Report

Dr. Burton addressed the following topics in her Superintendent's Report.

· Fire/Security Drills

The dates in item G1. represent the fire and security drills for the month of October for all of our buildings.

· C&MP Communications Update:

We have set up meetings with all of the school faculties to speak with staff regarding the C&MP projects. Ms. Jaffe is planning to address the financial background and project costs. I’ll be sharing out the projects at each school and together we’ll answer questions. I’ll be following up with the buildings with visits during their lunch time to touch base about C&MP and any other topics that the staff would like to discuss.

· Welcome Newly Elected Board Members:

Congratulations to Sonali, Cori, Jamie, and Jonathan who are our newly elected members to the Board!

· Veterans Day

The Millburn HS SAVe Club (Students Aiding Veterans) will be hosting a luncheon for all Millburn/Short Hills Veterans on Wednesday, November 13th in the HS cafeteria. In Recognition of Veteran’s Day, Millburn High School would like to recognize the service and sacrifice given for the United States. The HS students will have a chance to say thank you to the Veterans for their service.

· Thanksgiving Food Drive

The elementary PTOs are conducting their annual food drive to benefit local families in need of provisions for their Thanksgiving Day feast. Please plan to bring food items requested by your child’s school and grade level.

· She Kills Monsters

The MHS Limelight players will be presenting their rendition of She Kills Monsters. It is a surprisingly sweet tale of friendship, loss, and acceptance. Come out and enjoy this drama-comedy play on November 15 and 16th at 7:30 at the HS auditorium.

Millburn’s Second EdCamp (Goal 3)

Our second Edcamp, Edcamp The Mill 2019 was a great success.

  • Just over 100 participants joined for a Saturday morning of learning and conversations

  • We hosted 12 sessions, which included presentations and open discussion on many topics: How to Grow With Evaluations, LGBTQ+ Conversation, Google Applied Digital Skills, Mindfulness and Self Care, Empathy Through Diversity, and more.

  • Over 15 local businesses supported our event through sponsorships and prizes to raffled

  • 72% of our attendees were teachers

  • 30 of our attendees were Millburn employees.

Professional Development: (Goal #3)

Today, approximately 25 ELL and Regular Education teachers engaged in a professional development opportunity with Dr. Solange Lopes-Murphy, learning about Emergent Bilinguals/ELL Students. They discussed and learned topics surrounding the foundation for cultural differences. learning styles and exemplary practices needed for continuos success with our Emergent Bilinguals.

Sports News:

  • Boys Soccer NJSIAA North 2 Group 3 Sectional Champions and are competing in the State Semi-Finals Thursday vs Montville @ 6pm @ Indian hills HS.

  • Girls Volleyball completed a stellar season winning their conference and county tournaments.

  • Football completed their season with a 7 and 3 record. First time Millburn football has won 7 games since 1966
