What a Week!!!
It has been another short week!!!
6th-7th grade worked on learning about Media Literacy and strategies to recognize when a news article or social media post is legitimate or when it could be from an unreliable source. I also introduced the Power of We unit that all students will be doing this semester. They are learning about microfinancing and crowdfunding through the organization KIVA. Students will be choosing an individual to fund their $25 loan. They will research the country, the lending agency that they will be working with, and the repayment plan in order to create a presentation that will then be shared with a committee that will decide whether to loan them the $25 for the project.
3rd-4th grade learned about the science behind the human cannonball act at the circus. They dabbled with creating a prototype and next week they will create a variety of cannons to decide which will be the best to shoot their performer out of. We need toilet paper and paper towel rolls as well as Pringle cans!!
Next Week's Schedule
Tuesday - Smoke and Mirrors of Media Literacy, impact on Body Image and Self Esteem and KIVA Project
Wednesday - 5th grade - The Greatest Show on Earth - The science behind the HighWire and the Kiva Project. Mr. White will join us answer questions that we might have about the project.
Thursday The Greatest Show on Earth - The science behind the Human Cannonball act and the Kiva Project. Mr. White will join us answer questions that we might have about the project.
Asynch Behavior
"If you're like most people, you probably seek first to be understood; you want to get your point across. And in doing so, you may ignore the other person completely, pretend that you're listening, selectively hear only certain parts of the conversation or attentively focus on only the words being said, but miss the meaning entirely. So why does this happen? Because most people listen with the intent to reply, not to understand. You listen to yourself as you prepare in your mind what you are going to say, the questions you are going to ask, etc. You filter everything you hear through your life experiences, your frame of reference. You check what you hear against your autobiography and see how it measures up. And consequently, you decide prematurely what the other person means before he/she finishes communicating. Do any of the following sound familiar?" For gifted students, this can be a huge issue. They are so passionate about the things that they know or the way that they want to accomplish a task that they often bulldoze other students opinions or ideas. They are usually not aware that they do it or why someone is upset with them. On the flip side, gifted students can also be extremely quiet and they would rather not have to have a conversation about ideas. Therefore, working in teams or cooperative groups are usually not their favorite thing to do because they struggle with the listening and/or sharing of ideas. Over the next few weeks, we will do several activities to work on all of these issues and work to become better listeners and more confident team members.
