Daniel Wright Junior High School E-Notice - April 6, 2021
Band to Practice Outdoors Increasing Noise Level
Dear Members of the Daniel Wright Junior High School Community:
Due to restrictions and safeguards associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Daniel Wright Junior High School band program has been unable to practice with instruments when attending school in-person. This spring, as the weather improves, we are considering outdoor rehearsals, which facilitate airflow to the point at which, along with other mitigating factors, it would be reasonably safe to play aerosol producing instruments. Such rehearsals would begin no sooner than April 6 and might continue through the end of the school year.
Outdoor rehearsals would occur one to two times a day for approximately 20 minutes, Monday through Thursday through Friday, June 4. We recognize this has the potential to increase noise levels, particularly during the 11:19 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. and 3:05-3:35 p.m. time slots, during which there could be up to 16 musicians rehearsing. An ensemble rehearsal can produce sound levels of 100-120 decibels, which would fade over the intervening roughly 400 feet between the school and the nearest house to approximately 70-80 decibels. (This is slightly louder than normal conversation, but does not approach noise levels or durations that increase risk of hearing damage. It also does not take into account any dampening provided by physical structures such as trees or walls.)
Please share this message with any families near you who do not have students attending District 103 schools. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Katie Reynolds
Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction
