Fifth Grade Updates

December 10, 2015

Dear parents,

As we enter the last week of the semester, I invite you to look online and make sure your child has turned in the necessary assignments. If you see an assignment that your child is missing, please ask your child about it. Check whether it is due yet and if it might be in one of your child's folders. We want to make sure all our students get credit for work they have completed!

School Supplies

Over the next week or so, please look through your child's school supplies and see if they may need anything before beginning a new semester in January. We are noticing a lot of students who have lost or run out of supplies. We do not have extra supplies in our classrooms for your child to borrow so many are being forced to borrow from friends. Items to check for:

  • pencils
  • black pen
  • red pen
  • colored pencils
  • scissors
  • glue
  • ruler

College Week Project

Our wonderful counselor, Mrs. Carranza, is planning a great experience for our fifth graders for college week! This is something completely new that we are excited to try with our motivated children. Students will begin a group research project in their language arts classes on a specific college. They will be creating a report and a poster to describe the college they have been assigned. In order to make this a reality, we are in need of white, tri-fold posters (the same ones that we use for science fair). We need them as early as Monday, but students can continue to bring them all next week. Thank you for your help! What a great way to incorporate technology, language arts and writing into a project that will help our children's futures!

iCode Event

An amazing learning opportunity for our students is coming on December 16th & 17th to the Skaggs Library, sponsored by the Skaggs PTA. Our students will be fully engaged for over 90 minutes in hands-on technology experiences! iCode is a program that focuses on computer science, robotics, and technology. iCode's programs are based on a comprehensive approach to STEAM education, where children learn in a fun and dynamic environment.

Winter Parties

The holiday party is coming up soon! It will be on Friday December 18th and the grade coordinators and rooms parents have been getting busy setting up plans and buying supplies for all the grades.

The party will be on December 18 9:00-10:00 a.m.

If you are interested in volunteering for the party please contact/email the following person by Friday December 11th, so that they can plan better: In your email please also mention your child's teacher so that we can get the correct count.

Multicultural Night

We have Multicultural week from Jan 25th onwards with Multi-cultural night on Jan 28th evening. We are trying to get a committee of 3-4 parents in place to plan for it and work with our music teacher, who has some great ideas as well. If you are interested in being a part of that committee or to learn more about it, please email Preeti Kolankarai at pkola1school@gmail.com separately.

Timeliness

As we finish the semester and begin to prepare for middle school, we want to work on timeliness and responsibility with our students. One issue we have noticed is that our students tend to be late when transitioning. For example, they may have entered the building on time when you dropped them off, but they might take 10 minutes before getting into the classroom due to walking slowly, socializing, or taking time at their lockers. This then affects their warm-ups and classwork. We have the same issues when switching classes or packing up at the end of the day. We are going to begin signing OOPS passes for tardiness to class or dismissal as it is affecting our learning environment. If you know that your child takes a long time to get moving in the morning, please make sure to drop them off early enough for them to get to class before announcements begin at 7:48. As always, we appreciate your help and support!
