Ms. Ashmore's Class - March 5, 2021
This Week in Kindergarten...
This week we read the book Then and Now by Tracy Sato as a part of our reading curriculum. We focused on drawing conclusions with an informational text and learning oral vocabulary with words such as handwritten, gears, and phonograph. It was interesting to learn that long ago people used buggies to get around and that gathering around the radio was a popular family activity. The students were especially surprised to find out that kids of all ages worked in the same classroom and repeated their lessons out loud at the same time. They thought that would be very loud! We did not concentrate on any one time period but more on the changing of things over time and why that happens. Afterward, kindergartners wrote about something new that helps us and also tried using feather quills and ink to write.
During Social Studies, we learned about two more American symbols - the Statue of Liberty and the White House. We continued reading informational texts to find information and learned to draw Lady Liberty and build a paper version of the White House. We even tried making pennies turn green using vinegar and salt to replicate the statue turning green as a result of years of weathering. In reading about the White House, we were amazed to find that it has 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms!
Kindergartners were presented with a challenge this week: Can you work together in a group to build a kite that can fly at least five feet in the air? This week, we worked to brainstorm the properties of kites and possible kite shapes. Students were introduced to the materials (nylon, paper, plastic, dowels, craft sticks, etc.). Next week, they will build and test their kites. We will be sure to show you lots of pictures so you can see our project in action!
We Love to Read!
