Team:
Not long ago the leadership team took up the topic of student workload and ways we can help reduce the workload for our students but maintain the high expectations students need in order to be successful. Our students are stretched super thin for various reasons. We have some students who are just involved in everything, some who are super academically oriented and taking multiple honors/DC classes, and some that have to work to help out their families. Some of our students fall into all of those categories, and still others fall into none of those categories but are still stretched thin mentally and emotionally due to life stressors.
So, how can we as a school continue to expect high achievement and mastery from our students yet reduce the workload? The simple answer is to increase the engagement or complexity of the problem solving but reduce the amount of work expected. That's easier said than done and there's probably not a one size fits all solution.
For example, shorter and more complex tasks covering the scope of the TEKS might be more effective than a lot of medium sized tasks.
This article discusses what I believe many of our students experience but and some thought provoking solutions to consider. Moving this direction won't be fast or simple and will require all of our attention moving forward.
Keep up the good work!
PS - Check the schedule for next week - Buck Time is busy!
Have a great day!
