Blue Jay Briefings
December 1, 2021
A Message from the Office of the Superintendent
We are nearing the end of the 2021 calendar year and the school year continues to be a great one. We continue to monitor our COVID numbers closely and feel like things are going well and that we are still in a manageable position. The district’s goals continue to be to keep our students and staff safe while keeping the school year as “normal” as possible. We have lots of activities going on around the district for you to be aware of - Christmas concerts, sporting events, and many other events to engage our students and families. Please watch your child’s building calendar closely to see what is going on. As we begin to enter the time of the year when weather can become questionable, please note that we will continue to use the Blackboard system for emergency messages. We will also communicate through our district app, social media, and local media sources as well. The district will NOT be using AMI days for snow school closures this year as we have enough hours built into our schedule. Please be watching for another survey coming in December about 4 day school weeks. The district is continuing to investigate this possibility and we will be looking for your feedback when we have more details about what that could look like. Thank you so much for your continued support of the school district.
Mike Henry

Art teacher Heather Summers, guides her students to study the artist James Rizzi from New York each year. This year she also incorporated a mini Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. She pitched balloons and hung them above their heads to allow students to walk under them as if they were in the parade. Mrs. Summers hung students' artwork on the walls for all to see. The children love this artist because they are able to emulate him in their own work. The artist adds so many details to his art and it is a great way to show the students how to be more creative and to add details to their work.

Ms. Cardoza’s third grade had a fun week of Halloween learning integrated across subjects! To start the week students read Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds as a part of their language workshop. Later in the week, students worked in teams to complete a STEM challenge that involved making a plan for and building a fence to contain their very own creepy carrot. Below you can see students working together to carry out their plans. Students were then given a chance to observe pumpkins using all 5 of their senses and write about their observations. Finally, both in-person and virtual students were a part of a science experiment exploring chemical reactions with their carved pumpkin. Pictured below are some of the activities Mrs. Cardoza’s third graders participated in.

Mrs. Matthews' class had the opportunity to work directly with our Certified Apple trainer all the way from Chicago! The class and Mrs. Matthews worked live with the trainer to learn how to use new features on their iPads. The students used the notes feature to analyze story elements as they took pictures of their literature discussion books and learned how to annotate to show characters, setting, plot, and conflict. The students used the emoji keyboard to help show the mood and theme of the book!"
Jr. High
The Jr. High has a long standing tradition of celebrating "Book Character Day". We are not certain who enjoys this day more, the students or the staff.

Another tremendous success from the Carl and Glessie Young Auditorium! This is a reminder of our gratitude for this wonderful couple and their generosity to our community!
