Mill Creek Magic Messages
News and Updates from Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha 5/28/2021
Outdoor Learning is all the Rage!
Information - Upcoming Student Device Collection
6th Grade Promotion Information
- Date - Thursday, June 3 (June 8 rain date)
- Time - 4 p.m.
- Location - Outdoors, in front of Mill Creek (parent seating in the bus area)
- Dress - "Smart Casual" (khakis; polos; sun dresses)
*We just ask the students to look "nice." If they have casual dress shoes, great. However, please do not go to great expense to buy something you will only use once. For example, a clean/nice pair of sneakers will look just fine with some khakis and a polo if dress shoes have not been needed for other events this year.
We look forward to seeing our 6th grade parents/guardians and celebrating our 6th grade students!
Remaining PSSA Schedule
- June 3 (Science, Grade 4 only) - AM only (testing from 8:35 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.)
Virtual students will be provided with a lunch time on all dates, including the opportunity to obtain a school lunch (free of charge to all students this year). Virtual families are welcome to pick up their child at the conclusion of testing on all dates, but virtual students are also welcome to stay the entire school day on each date.
On June 3, virtual students will rejoin their virtual classes after lunch (12:10 p.m.), whether from home (students who are picked up after PSSA) or from Mill Creek.
Remaining PSSA Dates Information
Dear Mill Creek Parents and Families,
This note serves to provide an update to families about PSSA testing and scheduling at Mill Creek this year. As noted in district communication earlier this month, both the U.S. Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Education are requiring all school districts to administer PSSA testing for the 2020-2021 school year. The testing window has been extended so that districts can maintain compliance with their Health and Safety Plans.
Remaining Mill Creek School Testing Schedule
- Science
4th grade - June 3
Testing Platform
All students will test online through their school-issued laptop. They will be provided with a test “ticket” with a secure code for logging on to their test.
Testing of Virtual Academy Students
Testing is only available in-person and on-site, and each virtual student will be scheduled to take the test in his/her/their homeschool. We remain committed to adhering to the guidelines in our district’s Health and Safety Plan. In most cases, virtual students will test in the classroom of their virtual teacher.
Transportation
All students, including virtual students, have been assigned a bus route. Your children may take their bus to and from school on testing days. If you prefer to drive your student to and from school for testing and wish to pick them up in the middle of the day when they are finished, please let us know.
PSSA Materials
All 4th grade students are encouraged to bring the following materials to school on the final testing day:
- Fully charged laptop
- Laptop Charger (labeled with your child's name)
- Independent reading book
- Mouse (if you prefer a detached mouse)
- Headphones (for students with audio access during testing)
Mill Creek Day - Coming Soon!
As we celebrate the closure of this unusual year… Mill Creek will be holding its last spirit day on Friday June 4th (Rain date: June 7th). The school will be divided into two teams for the day:
SILVER STARS & BURGUNDY BURSTS
Mill Creek Day will give students, teachers and staff the opportunity to show off their school spirit and participate in fun activities and games. Students will participate in outdoor, as well as, classroom activities. There will be a running score tally for the teams throughout the day. At the conclusion of the day, the final scores will be announced prior to dismissal.
The Virtual Academy will also be running "indoor"/classroom activities for Mill Creek Day, which will occur online - also on June 4. We are coordinating activities for the virtual families who, through our recent survey, communicated that their student will attend for their "outside hour" part of the day. Thank you for understanding, that, due to coordination of the event, we are not able to take any additional attendees who did not complete our attendance survey. Virtual families whose students are attending should drop their child(ren) off at the start of their hour and pick them up at the conclusion of their hour. "Outside hours" are as follows:
- Kindergarten
AM – 10:00-11:00 a.m.
PM – 1:00-2:00 p.m. - 1st Grade – 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
- 2nd Grade – 12:00-1:00 p.m.
- 3rd Grade – 12:00-1:00 p.m.
- 4th Grade – 1:00-2:00 p.m.
- 5th Grade – 10:00-11:00 a.m.
- 6th Grade - 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Dropoff/pickup will occur at the normal school dropoff/pickup location (car parking side of the main parking area). Mill Creek adults will be present to supervise droppoff/pickup.
Current District COVID protocols will be enforced. NO VISITORS will be permitted to attend.

Principal's Post - A Weekly Note From Mr. Ortman
I want to extend my thanks and gratitude to those who serve or have served in our military, and, during this upcoming Memorial Day, especially those who have given their lives in that service. Our students/children and community have access to many freedoms that were secured and endure, in some cases, through that sacrifice. We are thankful that we can educate your children to think freely, providing them with the tools and knowledge to exercise Constitutionally protected thoughts and decisions. We are grateful for and indebted to those who have sacrificed to preserve these freedoms... especially as we honor those individuals this upcoming Memorial Day.

From the Desk of Mr. Murtha
As we come upon the Memorial Day holiday weekend... the unofficial start of summer... many of us will open pools, fire up the barbeque, and even start to gather once again. These are all staples of Memorial Day weekend. More importantly, however, we take time to honor and remember military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice, so we can continue to freely experience the joys of summer's unofficial start and many, many other freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis. I have incredible respect and gratitude for those who serve, as those who make such a commitment do so knowing the potential dangers involved. So, celebrate the joys of summer's unofficial start this weekend, but also take time to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, so we can experience those joys safely and freely.
Wishing you a weekend of joy and solemn remembrance...
Mr. John C. Murtha
Assistant Principal
