Dear HCS Families:
In recognition of inspirational teaching, our very own Miranda Johnson has been named the Vermont recipient of the Sanford Teacher Award for demonstrating commitment to creating an inspirational and harmonious classroom that supports student development and achievement! Miranda grew up in Williston, attending Williston Central School and CVU and is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. She has worked as a Kindergarten teacher at Hinesburg Community School for 14 years and lives in Huntington with her husband and two children.
Miranda was selected by a committee of educators through an application process that included nominations and information provided by each teacher to assess how closely they represent characteristics of inspiring teaching, which included: Enthusiasm for teaching; empathy and warmth towards all students; fostering positive relationships with all students; creating a positive learning environment; and recognizing student strengths.
The $10,000 award is in the name of philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, which is committed to supporting inspiring teaching nationwide through PreK-12 programs that are being expanded nationally by the National University System. In addition to being the recipient of the Sanford Teachers Award for the State of Vermont, Miranda also qualifies for a chance to be recognized as the $50,000 national winner of the Sanford Teacher Award; to be named in early 2019.
Congratulations, Miranda! We are very proud of you and this well deserved award!
Suzan and John

Check Out Our New Playground Structure!
HCS students and staff are excited about our new universally accessible playground. The playground currently features a paved walkway and a glider for everyone to enjoy. This additional playground will provide a fun and safe place for all of our students to be engaged, connected and have a sense of belonging. This added playground gives students extra space to move around and the new structure provides some added excitement and creativity as students figure out how to incorporate it into their play. It has been a lot of fun watching the students take turns sharing the glider, both riding on and pushing it and better yet, it is amazing to see how all students can participate and have fun together.
Scripps Spelling Bee Now at HCS!
HCS has just been registered as a participating school for the Scripps Spelling Bee Program! That means, over the next few months, interested students will compete at local Bees for a chance to qualify for the National Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington, DC in late May 2019.
With a few restrictions, HCS will offer participation to eligible students by teacher recommendation with parent/guardian permission. Eligible home-schoolers are also welcome to participate. Specific eligibility info here: http://spellingbee.com/eligibility

Financial Literacy
This year the HCS library is not using the Vermont “Reading is an Investment” program. However, we will still be conducting financial literacy lessons for kindergarten through 4th grade students during the weeks of December 10th and 17th. The money skills they will learn about are listed below:
Kindergarten: Wants vs. needs, saving and trading
1st Grade: Trading money for goods and services
2nd Grade: How people long ago traded to get what they needed and examples of entrepreneurs
3rd Grade: Saving for yourself and others (delayed gratification)
4th Grade: Careers related to personal interest and strengths, wage vs. salary and types of education required for different careers
We will be conducting our own contest with money related prizes. Please watch for a reading log and contest details coming home with your student(s) the week of December 10th. All HCS students are welcome to complete the reading log and enter our financial literacy contest.
