Sturgeon Bay High School Newsletter
February 2024
From the Principal
Hello Sturgeon Bay High School Families,
We are in full swing of the second semester. Please see below for a few key dates and read on in the newsletter for even more great information!
- On Saturday, February 8, we will be holding our Sadie Hawkins Dance at Stone Harbor. Ticket prices are $10 per student and the dance runs from 8:00pm - 11:00pm.
- We will be holding our second and last Family/Teacher Conferences later this month! Please plan on joining us on Thursday, February 22 when we will have our Family/Teacher Conferences from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. Teachers will be in their rooms and this is a great opportunity for parents to talk with their child's teacher and see how their student is doing at this point in the year.
- Last year we offered Summer School Credit Recovery for students who needed to make up credits from classes they didn't pass. We will once again be offering Summer School for Credit Recovery as well as Weight Room Training. More information will be coming out in the following weeks.
Please take a few moments to review the newsletter below to see all the great things happening at Sturgeon Bay High School. As always, thank you for your continued support of SBHS!
All my best,
Keith Nerby
Principal

Jazz Festival: Sturgeon Bay High School held a pilot year for a jazz festival to help students grow in their knowledge of jazz music. Professors Brent Turney and Matthew Buchman from UW - Stevens Point provided instruction for each band and masterclasses throughout the day. We were joined by Southern Door High School jazz band, TJ Walker Middle School jazz band, Swingin' Door Big Band and students from Sevastopol. The evening concluded with a fabulous concert. We are looking forward to another jazz festival in the future. A big thank you to all of our jazz students and their parents as well as our district music team for making this a reality and a success. THANK YOU ALL!!!
Solo - ensemble: There are two district solo ensemble festivals to meet family needs. One is on Saturday, February 10 at Gibraltar. The other is on Tuesday, February 20th at Sturgeon Bay from 4:30 - 8:30. We will need many hands to make hosting the festival a success. If you like music and seeing the good things our students are doing and would like to help with the festival, please email Mrs. Hintz at hhintz@sbsdmail.net and let her know you would like to be a room monitor or help with feeding the judges and festival workers. You may also sign up on this spread sheet to help. You will surely be delighted with the great music you will hear throughout the festival evening!!!
Pops Concert: Our annual band pops concert has had a date change to Thursday, February 29th at 6:00 p.m. The concert is a cabaret style concert with food and refreshments available for purchase and takes place in the gym. Tickets go on sale to the high school band on February 1 for table seating. Tables are round tables that hold up to 8 people, so have your party together for purchasing. Table seats are $6 for each seat. Bleacher seats are available for purchase at the door on Feb. 29. We hope to see many of you there.

Ski and Snowboard Team
After a slow start due to weather conditions, your Sturgeon Bay Ski and Snowboard was finally able participate in the first two meets of the season occurring the last week of January. At the first meet, Senior Tristan Brilla led the way, winning the Christie Mountain boys snowboard competition and signaling his intention to return to the State meet in February. Tristan finished third at Granite Peak later in the week. Congratulations to Tristan on a great start to the 2024 snowboarding season!
Newcomer Mackensie Mclain has also impressed on the snowboard side of the hill in her first two meets, successfully completing 12 straight slalom and giant slalom courses to begin what is sure to be a storied high school career!
The Clipper Ski Team started their season in foggy conditions at Granite Peak. Senior Maddie Propsom and Sophomore June VanLieshout led the way for the Clippers overall with top 20 finishes, while Senior Julia Gregory also posted near team-best times in Giant Slalom and the Super G events. Sophomore Jordis Brilla looked great in her return to the slopes as well.
On the boys side, the Clippers were led by Senior Ben Stephens who finished 22nd overall, including top 20 finishes in the Giant Slalom and Super G events.
Hopefully the winter weather will cooperate and allow more ski and snowboarding for our team!
Ski fast, have fun, Go Clippers!

Cell Phone Expectations
We understand that cell phones and similar items are a way of life for many students and families. We also need to help teach our students when it is appropriate and not to use these devices. We thank you in advance for your partnership as we work to help students focus on academics and learning in the classrooms.
