We are confident that he will seek to understand the needs of our community, and help provide much needed solutions to support our technology goals. Part of Chris's role will be to help create a vision toward instructional technology and an infrastructure to support it. We hope each of you will extend a warm welcome to Chris, who will be coming on board on Monday, January 12, 2015 and will be a welcome addition to our technology team.

New Teacher Assistant for Upper I

Please welcome Luis Ramos to our UCLA Lab School Community. We have all, at one point, been new to this magical place. Remember what that was like and extend a smile, hello and helping hand when you see Luis.

He is first generation Mexican-American, from the San Fernando valley, Reseda specifically. Both his parents are Mexican. He has 2 younger sisters. Luis graduated from UCSB with majors in Chicano Studies and Global Studies with an emphasis in Latin America AND minored in education and Spanish. His passion is education and wants to change the lack of representation of people of color in higher learning.

Writers Workshop in Room 13

Samaya was writing a personal narrative, and was in the middle of writing the word cocina, when she stopped short, and wrote along the bottom margin, "cosina" "cosena", and started thinking. Ms. Gomez approached her at this time and asked about her work. She said --No sé... and pointed to the words. She said --No sé, con la i o con la e? On the spot conferencing led to a discussion of the /i/ and /e/ sounds. Together they read each of the options Samaya had "given a try" at the bottom of her paper, emphasizing the vowel sound of each. Her face then lit up, and she said --esta! and proceeded to finish writing the word using an i!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Chris Wilson

This is his 7th year at the Lab School and 21st year teaching! His great-grandmother, Emma Goeddel Wilson, graduated from the State Normal School of California, Los Angeles (which is now UCLA Lab School), on March 5, 1909. He lives in Long Beach with his partner David and two dogs. His older dog is blind and named Mei-Mei (which mean little sister in Chinese). Chris's younger dog is named Cha-Cha and is super smart and has learned to help guide Mei-Mei around the house. He bought and lives in his grandparents home, the home his dad and aunts grew up in. Chris loves art, architecture and writing. Believe it or not....he has been the officiant (minister) for four weddings of friends and family.
