Rock Metaphor: I know I got this idea from a website, but I can't find it now. In a nutshell...you get 3 different sized rocks. One huge, one medium, and a few small. You use them to describe reasons why someone might need to see the counselor. Big rocks=big problems (divorce, death, etc.) medium rocks=argument, anxiety over a project, etc.) small=the little things that add up (spilled milk on your shorts+late homework+tripped in the hall=irritable mood) You can put your own spin on this but the concept is that everyone has "rocks" they carry that make it hard to do daily tasks and concentrate. Talking with someone can help lighten the load. School Counselors can't take the rock from others, but they can help carry the weight.
*With elementary and even middle school, I liked to read the book "The Hurt" with the kids to illustrate what I had just discussed. I put it on Google slides, so you can use this if you would like!
