5 for Outside
To play in snow, students should have 5 for outside.
It is helpful if students have a bag /reusable shopping bag to keep winter gear organized. Our coat hook areas get very crowded in the winter time. Students should be prepared to go outside every day. We go outside almost every day- even if the ground is wet/snowy/muddy we will be going out at recess. Students have more fun when they have the things they need to stay clean, warm, and dry.
Home Learning Connections
Reading: Fun ways to read 20 minutes per day:
- Read with a parent- take turns on each page or by chapter.
- Read to a sibling
- Read to a pet or stuffed animal
- Read in a fort with a flashlight
Writing:
- Have your child write a few items for the shopping list (even if Alexa makes a list too)
- Write classmates names on Valentines
- Write a letter to mail to a family member
Math:
- Play a card game- have students add their own score.
- Give students a handful of coins in your pocket. Have them identify coins and their value, count the coin combination. They are especially motivated if they can keep the coins!
- Play games like Uno, Yahtzee, Qwixx and more.
- Roll dice and add the numbers.
Mid Year Assessments
Has your child come home talking about assessments? They may have shared with you that they worked with a teacher, small group, or even on the computer to complete one of our benchmark assessments.
Benchmarking is a common practice of assessing students beginning, middle and end of the year to track growth over time and help drive our instructional practices. This is done over the course of three weeks and can look different from grade level to grade level and assessment to assessment. Some formats may include:
- traditional paper/pencil
- 1:1 interviews/activities with a staff member
- computer based
Some of the assessments that we currently use are, Early Bird Literacy (K&1), Star Reading & Star Math (1-4), USNS, Student Assessment Systems Modules, Letter Name/Sound, sight words etc.
The information we learn from these assessments is used to determine instructional pacing, strategies and how we can target students' needs more intentionally. In addition, some of the assessments are used for reporting out on report cards, which are available for Trimester 2 in the last weeks of March.
