Hello SMMS families,
I hope you had a great Spring Break and your student is ready to come back strong. We have lots to do! First, we want all the students to be totally caught up as we complete the third quarter of the school year. The last day is April 8th, and we'd love to see everyone earn the highest grades possible to show all that they have learned as we enter the final quarter of the year. As you know, we'll do most of 4th quarter in the "hybrid" model of school. We've been working very hard to get everything ready. As you can imagine, there have been nearly countless things to plan for, but we'll be as ready as possible on the first day of hybrid instruction on April 19th.
Here are the main things to know as we get closer to hybrid:
- Every family should have turned in this survey about returning to school or staying in distance learning. This is VERY IMPORTANT as it gives us the number of students we have to prepare a physical learning space for. It will be very difficult to add additional students to the in-person classes during hybrid due to physical and social distancing as well as cleaning protocols, so if your student will be coming in person, we need to know now. If you are not sure if your student will come in person or not, choose in-person to start because it will be easy to transition back to distance learning, but not at all easy for us to add students to hybrid once we begin preparing the classrooms. If you make any changes to your plan, let your advisory teacher know so they can make sure we have the most up-to-date information regarding your plans for when hybrid begins.
- Students will get the same lessons whether they are in person or at home. So no matter what you choose, your child will have access to the same instruction and content.
- Wednesdays will be the same schedule as they are now, except we will add a live, virtual, advisory class at 1:15 on Wednesdays to help maintain the connections we are building in advisory this year and we won't be able to do live advisory classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday once we begin hybrid. Kids will still access advisory content, and can check in with their advisory teacher every day, but they won't have a live advisory class except on Wednesday.
- Since our schedule on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday will be different because of hybrid instruction, our afternoon support groups will have new schedules as well.
- We will send out a final student schedule (what each day looks like for kids in-person or in CDL) soon. Your child's class times will change on April 19th, so be sure to look closely at the schedule when we send it! We'll also share some SMMS videos that show what to do when you get to school during hybrid so everyone will be prepared for a smooth school day.
- I will host a Q/A for families on the evening of April 6th and will send out videos shortly after that to show how a hybrid day will work.
- Bus routes won't be done for middle school or high school until April 9th.
- All students will still have access to breakfast and lunch, whether they are in CDL or in-person. Here is a letter explaining how to access meals.
- Thanks for your support as we continue to provide instruction in distance learning and prepare for hybrid at the same time. It's a lot of work, but we know our kids are worth it! Keep a lookout for more information around hybrid as we get it prepared in the coming weeks.
I know that you will have lots of questions about what school will be like during hybrid, for students who remain in CDL, and for those who come two days each week (four hours each day). I encourage you to keep checking updates on the HSD website and staying in close contact with your advisory teacher. Even though we don't have the answers to everything as we work to get hybrid started, we greatly appreciate your support and flexibility. Together, we will continue to help our students achieve great things and set them on their way to a successful life. Thanks for your partnership and collaboration!
Stay safe, and keep working hard.
Go Hawks!
Upcoming Dates
We'll be sending out clear student schedules (for students attending hybrid and for those in CDL) in early April. We'll also send out videos showing what to do if you are attending school in-person so kids know what to expect when they arrive at the building. Stay tuned for these! Students will also get a lot of explanation of schedule changes and what to do through advisory, so it is very important that they attend every day!
Our current 7th graders will be getting forecasting information for 8th grade starting on March 29th in their advisory classes.
We are sending information to our incoming 7th graders and their families about forecasting and to help them get to know SMMS on March 29th.
On April 6th, we'll have a Q/A session for families about hybrid and the last quarter of the year. 6:00 - 7:00 in English and 7:00 to 8:00 in Spanish.
The 3rd quarter ends on Thursday, April 8th - make sure your student has everything turned in before this day!
April 9th is a no-school day so teachers can complete grading.
April 14th, April 15th, and April 16th, students will work asynchronously on their classwork. They will need to check in to each class for attendance. Teachers will be using these days to prepare for hybrid.
April 19th, hybrid instruction begins. Students who signed up to come in-person will come two days each week from roughly 10:00 until 2:00. Students with last names A-L will attend on Mondays and Thursdays, and last names M-Z will attend on Tuesdays and Fridays. Days that students are not in-person, they will still attend class virtually on their Chromebooks.
If you have any technology problems, call 503-886-8956 for help.
Please bring back any books from last year any day you can. Thanks for your help bringing back these items, even if they are from your elementary school. We'll take them!
Mantente a salvo y sigue trabajando duro.
¡Vamos Hawks!
Fechas Importantes
