The Paw Print
Burke County Public Schools Newsletter
September 28, 2022
Brrr! We don't know about you guys, but these past couple of mornings have been pretty chilly! This past Thursday, September 22, commemorated the Autumn Equinox (or the first day of Fall) so get your rakes ready and zip up your very light windbreaker (that can only be worn in the early morning and late evening)!
Fall is usually used as a symbol for change, but it can also be looked at as a time of abundance and reaping your rewards. So view it in the way that most pertains to you. As always, Stay #BearBuilt!
The Paw Print is released on the 2nd and 4th weeks of every month. The newsletter features sports updates, events in the community, and fun activities for the family... so stay tuned!
See You at the Pole
The fourth Wednesday in September is internationally recognized as " See You at the Pole" Day, the global day of student prayer. Burke County Public Schools is proud to see our students and community members come together this morning with the same cause: to uplift their friends, family and community.

Wait, what?!....Dawgs in the Bear Den?
Before Friday Night Football kicked off in the Bear Den, Malcolm Mitchell was stationed outside of the stadium where he give away autographed books and took pictures with fans.
The pictures taken from Malcolm's book signing Friday, September 9th, can be accessed by clicking the image above!
On Friday, September 9th and 23rd, Burke County Public Schools welcomed Malcolm Mitchell, author and former University of Georgia and New England Patriots football star.
Founder of Share the Magic, Mitchell’s passion for sharing the books that you love with others is clear as he interacts with students across the country. In partnership with Burke County Public Schools’ Literacy Project “Reading Today, Thriving Tomorrow,” Mitchell invited students to join in his nationwide effort to motivate children to read and write at advanced levels in not only the academic setting but in students’ leisure as well.
I'm honored to speak to the outstanding Readers to Leaders in Burke County," said Mitchell. I'm also excited about teaming up on a broader scale to inspire more kids to read in Burke County. To lead you have to read."
To follow the magic of reading, teachers, parents, and students are encouraged to participate in the READMarathon virtual reading challenge. READMarathon is a friendly 26.2 day reading challenge focusing on reading stamina. This challenge was designed to improve reading stamina and endurance through a running marathon format for reading. Three different events with finish lines of reading minutes are available to join. READMarathon 2022 is free and starts on October 11. https://www.readwithmalcolm.com/readmarathon/

Martin has a seat at the table during historic conference in Washington
Burke County Public Schools Nutrition Director, Donna Martin, was invited to speak on a panel regarding Food Access for Children and Families at the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. The conference took place today, September 28, 2022, at the Ronald Reagan International Conference Center in Washington D.C.
It’s been more than 50 years since the first and only White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health was held in 1969. That pivotal event helped galvanize actions that included the creation of life-changing programs like WIC and SNAP.

Did You Miss the Call?
Unfortunately, some phones may send this number into a spam folder which leaves you to miss out on all of the news and updates sent by the school.
There is a way to prevent that from happening! Simply add 855-977-0602 to your contacts and you will receive all of the informational updates we send out!
If you haven't received anything from this number, you may have to update your contact information. You can make sure we have the correct contact information by checking with your school office staff, parent coordinator, or student information specialist.
Parents & Guardians Have Homework Too!
The online process replaces the paper forms sent home at the beginning of each school year used to update student information.
We strongly encourage all parents and guardians to complete their student's information update. Updating your current contact information is imperative for receiving report cards and other important messages.
Burke County families will access the online student information update through their existing Power School Parent Portal account by following these simple steps:
1. Check your email, including the junk or spam folders, for an email from noreplyregistration@powerschool.com. This email
contains your student’s unique verification passcode, called a “SnapCode.”
*If you are a parent/guardian of multiple returning students, you received a separate email for each student.
2. Review the emailed directions on completing the online verification form.
3. Follow the link to log into PowerSchool using the provided “Snapcode.”

Word of the Day
The Word of the Day is Kerfuffle! Kerfuffle is a noun that means a disturbance or fuss typically caused by a dispute or conflict.
The teacher asking which Season is the best caused quite a kerfuffle amongst her students (Fall is obviously the best season).
We challenge you all to use this word as many times as you can this week, extra points if you use it in the right context, EVEN MORE points if you have to explain to somebody what it means!
National Day Calendar
September 28 commemorates Women's Health and Fitness Day, Good Neighbor Day, North Carolina Day, and Strawberry Cream Pie Day. Burke County families can commemorate these special days by uniting all the women in your family and taking a walk (with plenty of stops to eat salads) to a gym that is right over the North Carolina border.
Hopefully, someone who NEIGHBORS the gym will conveniently have a strawberry cream pie made that you can take back on the road to Georgia. Hopefully, the sweet treat will hold you well during the 128 hour walk.
