Panther Prowl
Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Greetings Panther Families
I can't believe it is already March and the spring sports season is off and running with track, baseball, boys golf, softball, and boys volleyball. Spring Break is also coming up fast the week of April 2nd through the 6th. Please encourage your student to remain vigilant and focused on their academic performance as the last three months of school are extremely busy and seem to go by extremely fast.
Here's your Panther Prowl for March 2, 2018.

Puente
Puente is a program aimed at underserved populations and is designed to help students graduate from high school, become college eligible, and enroll in college. In 9th and 10th grade, students take a sequence of college preparatory English Language Arts courses with the same Puente-trained teacher, who integrates Latino and multicultural literature into the district’s mandated core curriculum.
Over 700 freshmen Puentistas from Southern California, including our very own Panthers, participated in Puente's Southern Leadership Conference held at UC Irvine, where they got a chance to meet two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique's Journey (a novel read in class).
Puente will be hosting an overnight field trip to Cal State LA and USC on April 13th, and to UC Santa Barbara on April 14th. Puente parents and students are invited to attend. Please contact your student's Puente teacher for more information.

NJROTC
NJROTC continues to support our community in March.
Our cadets will be heading to CFIS on March 9th and Raney IS on March 16th spending the majority of the day to recruit potential cadets. During our visit we will join the 8th graders in their PT sessions, have lunch with them, and set up an information booth. Our goal is 100 or more new cadets for next school year.
On March 17th cadets will support The Annual District Arts Festival at Heritage Park in Corona with traffic control duty, as well as greeting and welcoming spectators. On this same day, we will be holding our annual BBQ Fund Raiser in support of District Math Day held at Corona High School.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
"The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is a continuing and
nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and
can do. NAEP has often been called the “gold standard” of assessments because
it is developed using the best thinking of assessment and content specialists,
education experts, and teachers from around the nation.
NAEP provides results on subject-matter achievement, instructional experiences, and school environment for populations of students (e.g., all fourth-graders) and groups within those populations (e.g., female students, Hispanic students). NAEP does not provide scores for individual students or schools, although state NAEP can report results by selected large urban districts. NAEP results are based on representative samples of students at grades 4, 8, and 12 for the main assessments, or samples of students at ages 9, 13, or 17 years for the long-term trend assessment. These grades and ages were chosen because they represent critical junctures in academic achievement."
Schools are randomly selected, and this year Corona High School was a participating school. A sample of our 12th graders took the online assessments on March 1st and those results have been reported. Although we will not receive individual scores, we will receive our overall students performance. This data (along with all the other participating schools from throughout the country) will be part of our "Nation's Report Card."

CNUSD Fusion Dance Update
In light of recent disturbing incidences in schools around our nation, the Fusion Dance that includes Corona High School, Centennial High School, Roosevelt High School, JFK Middle College High School, Norco High School, and Santiago High School has been cancelled. Although no threat is present, an event of this scale may not be best at this time. I would like to ensure everyone we will be brainstorming the details of the refund process. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes and thank everyone for your understanding.
