Greetings Panther Families

I can't believe it is already March and the spring sports season is off and running with track, baseball, boys golf, softball, and boys volleyball. Spring Break is also coming up fast the week of April 2nd through the 6th. Please encourage your student to remain vigilant and focused on their academic performance as the last three months of school are extremely busy and seem to go by extremely fast.

The following teachers were recognized from Norco HS, Centennial HS, and Santiago HS, respectively: Kim Bolle, Jasmine Nault, Shane Vanginkel. We are so proud of her contributions to our students, some who would never know exactly how much work she puts in "behind the scenes" to support them. Congratulations, Mrs. Reinhart!

Puente is a program aimed at underserved populations and is designed to help students graduate from high school, become college eligible, and enroll in college. In 9th and 10th grade, students take a sequence of college preparatory English Language Arts courses with the same Puente-trained teacher, who integrates Latino and multicultural literature into the district’s mandated core curriculum.

Over 700 freshmen Puentistas from Southern California, including our very own Panthers, participated in Puente's Southern Leadership Conference held at UC Irvine, where they got a chance to meet two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique's Journey (a novel read in class).

Puente will be hosting an overnight field trip to Cal State LA and USC on April 13th, and to UC Santa Barbara on April 14th. Puente parents and students are invited to attend. Please contact your student's Puente teacher for more information.

Renaissance is a new class being offered this year at Corona High School and is taught by Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Julie Gressley-Enger. The primary objective of this program is to promote a positive school climate by recognizing the great things happening at Corona in regards to academics. Simply put, it's cool to do school! Part of this program is Panthers on Point, which is classroom recognition for students who are lending a Helping Hand, engaging in Simple Act of Kindness, have an A+ Attitude, are simply deserving of a High-Five, or demonstrated those important Go-Getter skills. On March 17th cadets will support The Annual District Arts Festival at Heritage Park in Corona with traffic control duty, as well as greeting and welcoming spectators. On this same day, we will be holding our annual BBQ Fund Raiser in support of District Math Day held at Corona High School.

It's that time of year once again for our freshmen to take the Physical Fitness Test! This mandatory state test is taken in grades five, seven, and nine. Please encourage your ninth grade student to approach this as they would any other test in any other academic class. The PFT provides both the school and the state important information on student fitness. Please follow this link for more information from the CA Department of Education:

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

The following description of NAEP is taken from the National Center for Education Statistics (click here for more information,

"The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is a continuing and

nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and

can do. NAEP has often been called the “gold standard” of assessments because

it is developed using the best thinking of assessment and content specialists,

education experts, and teachers from around the nation.

NAEP provides results on subject-matter achievement, instructional experiences, and school environment for populations of students (e.g., all fourth-graders) and groups within those populations (e.g., female students, Hispanic students). NAEP does not provide scores for individual students or schools, although state NAEP can report results by selected large urban districts. NAEP results are based on representative samples of students at grades 4, 8, and 12 for the main assessments, or samples of students at ages 9, 13, or 17 years for the long-term trend assessment. These grades and ages were chosen because they represent critical junctures in academic achievement."

Schools are randomly selected, and this year Corona High School was a participating school. A sample of our 12th graders took the online assessments on March 1st and those results have been reported. Although we will not receive individual scores, we will receive our overall students performance. This data (along with all the other participating schools from throughout the country) will be part of our "Nation's Report Card."

Athletics News

Pep Squad: There is a mandatory parent/guardian and student meeting on Wednesday, March 21st at 6:30 pm in our Performing Arts Center for any students interested in joining the 2018-19 Pep Squad.

Girls Wrestling
: Our Panther wrestlers competed at the CIF State Championships on February 23rd/24th in Visalia and placed 3rd out of 220 schools, 5 points shy of repeating as State runner-ups. Nevertheless, our ladies battled their way through tough competition and came home with 3 medalists and 2 top 12 finishes with Abbi Turner and Amara Devericks. Leading the way was State Finalist Caitlin Cardenas who ran through the #2 ranked wrestler and making it to the finals. Another great performance came from Rosie Chang who entered the state tournament unranked and powered her way to a 3rd place finish. Sugey Ceja overcame a 2nd round injury and won 6 uncontested matches in a row to a 3rd place finish and became our very first 4-time State Championship placer for Corona High and the Inland Empire. Additionally, Caitlin and Sugey both received Pursuing Victory with Honor recognition.

We are very proud of their performance and thank them and Coach Bowers for another successful and memorable season.

Counseling Department and College/Career Center

Counselors have already begun the scheduling process with our students for next year. Should you have questions about this process or your child's courses, please reach out to his/her counselor. They will begin 9th to 10th grade registration on Monday, March 5th. Teachers will be escorting students to the counseling office with their course selection sheets to choose their appropriate courses. In addition, counselors will be enrolling students into summer school at the same time. Please speak to your student and/or your student's counselor should you have any questions about this process.

Current Juniors and Sophomores who received a summer school form need to turn it in to the counseling office as soon as possible. Summer school is essential for some students who need to get back on track for graduation, or for some enrolled in special programs with impacted schedules.

Textbook Room News

Parents, every year as we near graduation students are notified of outstanding textbooks that can lead to obligations. These outstanding books can end up costing the school thousands of dollars collectively if not returned. For seniors, this may result in withholding of the diploma. As notices are sent home regarding obligations from our textbook room, please work with your students to ensure that all books are returned. You may contact Mrs. Rapp ( in the textbook room if there are questions regarding this issue.

CNUSD Fusion Dance Update

In light of recent disturbing incidences in schools around our nation, the Fusion Dance that includes Corona High School, Centennial High School, Roosevelt High School, JFK Middle College High School, Norco High School, and Santiago High School has been cancelled. Although no threat is present, an event of this scale may not be best at this time. I would like to ensure everyone we will be brainstorming the details of the refund process. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes and thank everyone for your understanding.
