ZBTHS Parent Bulletin
From the ZBTHS Principal's Office Vol. 2, Issue 17
Principal's Message 4/8/22
Beginning next week, we have 28 more student attendance days for freshman, sophomores, and juniors. The last full day for seniors is Thursday, May 12, 2022 giving them only 24 more attendance days. We need your help, parents and guardians. We all need to keep our students motivated and supported to finish the semester strong. With summer months in sight, this is not the time for students to relax. This is the time when students must remain focused, organized, and committed to their course work. Parent and guardian support is essential in these last few weeks. Student attendance is very important. Time outside of school for students to complete assignments and prepare for assessments is important. Together we can have a positive influence on students as they strive for excellent results to end Semester 2.
Next week on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, we are facilitating the SAT. This is required by the state of Illinois. On this day all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors must take a version of the SAT. There are also several seniors who must take the SAT, since it is required by the state of Illinois in order to graduate. School begins on this day at our regular time, 7:50 am. Buses will run in the morning at their normal times. The test for juniors will take more time. Therefore, freshmen and sophomores will be released around 12:00 pm while juniors and required seniors will be released around 1:00 pm. We will run buses home at both times. Students receive the procedures on this day from their classroom teachers and advisors.
I want to thank all our parents and guardians for all your support this year and in years past. The success of students each year is a result of our collective effort. This has been very important as we have been challenged to maintain the continuity of educational services through these COVID months.
Sincerely,
Dr. Chris Pawelczyk

District 126 NJROTC - A successful end of the year
The Zion-Benton NJROTC Drill Team recently competed in the 2022 NJROTC National Academic, Athletic, & Drill Competition in Pensacola, Florida April 1st and 2nd. Six hundred NJROTC units from across the country competed in the 2021-2022 drill season, with only twenty-seven qualifying for this prestigious event. The best teams in the country competed in five drill events (armed & Unarmed basic drill, armed & unarmed exhibition drill, and color guard), three athletic events (curl/ups, push-ups, and 16X100 relay), and a 15-person academic test. There were also two individual drill “knock-out” events (armed and unarmed) where over 500 cadets performed drill movements from verbal commands and were “knocked out” when not performed perfectly. Three Zee-Bees made the top ten: Kaylee Castellanos, 8th place Armed, Nathan Engreso, 2nd place Unarmed, and Sean Sarzabo, National Champion Armed.
Thirty Two cadets, two instructors, and small contingent of enthusiastic parents made the trip to Florida to represent Zion-Benton at Nationals. The team performed admirably under extreme pressure placing in the top 15 in the nation in several events. Team Captains Jaibre Handy and Karla Gutierrez did a fantastic job this year leading the team to national status.
On the 18th and 19th of March the ZB NJROTC Rifle Team competed in the All-Service National Championship in Port Clinton, Ohio. The ZB’s made the podium and placed 5th and 15th out of 28 teams. The team also won $500 for finishing in 5th place.
This past fall 6,051 cadets representing JROTC units in the continental United States, Europe, and the Pacific competed in the JROTC postal competitions. 798 cadets advanced to compete in JROTC Service Championships at Anniston, Alabama; Camp Perry, Ohio; and Chandler Arizona. A total of 217 cadets, the top three percent of those who began this qualification process, advanced to compete in this National Championship. We are extremely proud of our ZB cadets for their outstanding performances during the competition.
Receiving medals and competing on Team 1, 5th place overall, were Niko Jackson, Amarisa Jackson, Saylet Hernandez and Kalinn White.
Competing on team 2, 15th place overall, were Kim Rico, Cortney Berry, Andrew Yoshii and Addyson Gustafson.
Also, Miah Leong (first year competitor) qualified and participated as an individual for this competition.
Individually, Amarisa Jackson finished 17th overall, Saylet Hernandez 31st and Kalinn White 44th out of 217 competitors.
District 126 is proud to have the 5th best marksmanship team in the Nation. What a remarkable accomplishment.
FINAL EXAMS: Tue. May 17th, Wed. May 18th, Thu. May 19th
The City of Zion is looking to replace its five city signs that are placed throughout the community. We are excited to announce that our District 126 students have been invited to partner with the City of Zion to participate in all phases of the project.
The initial phase for this project is calling on District 126 students to help create a new design for these signs. To get the very best design for the city, we are facilitating a contest in which all District 126 students will be eligible to create and submit an original design. The top three designs will each receive a $1,000 prize and present their designs at a May 4th Joint Board Meeting between District 126 and the City of Zion.
Design submissions must be turned in no later than April 15th to Mr. Andrew Stout, Department Head for Career and Technical Programs, at ZBTHS or to Ms. Bonnie Felske, Principal at New Tech. Please see the attached flyer and use the link below for more information and important details.
