Fall Conferences

Thanks to all the families that came to conferences on Thursday. We are always happy to continue the relationship between the school and home. We do have one more night of conferences on Monday, October 26. If you are still interested in scheduling a conference with your student's teachers please contact our main office and they will do the best to get you a time. We can be reached at (319) 558-2452.

End of 1st Quarter & Mid-Terms

Wednesday, October 28 marks the end of the 1st Quarter for Exploratories. These classes include Art, Computer Science, Engineering Technology, and Wellness. On Thursday students will rotate to their next Exploratory. Wednesday also marks the official mid-term for the 1st Semester. Parents received/will receive a printout of grades. In some cases they may look the same, but we will send out "official" mid-terms with the students. These will be passed out to students on Tuesday, November 3.

FYI: With the increased cost of postage we will only send end of semester grades only through the USPS (mail).

Fall Play

3-2-1 Blast Off

On Friday, October 16 & Saturday, October 17 the Franklin Drama Club put on their fall play. This year's play was titled 3-2-1 Blast Off. Those who attended should have left impressed with the performance of the actors and crew, but also by the fact that the play was written by our Franklin students who began work last spring and continued it over the summer. Thanks to all our students, directors, and volunteers who helped make this fall's production a huge success.

FMA Live Assembly

Learning Science Through Hip-Hop

On Wednesday, October 14 we hosted the FMA Live Science Assembly sponsored by Honeywell. We held two separate assemblies that involved student and staff volunteers to help teach the laws of motion. We were the only Cedar Rapids' middle school that was fortunate to have this assembly and it was free of charge. This was made possible through their sponsors; NASA & Honeywell. Hopefully you heard about this event when your child came home from school. We had a number of great student and staff volunteers that helped spread Newton's Laws of Gravity.

Be sure to check out the different links below for all the media coverage that was done of this event.

Jim Jelinske Bullying Assembly

Respectful, Responsible, Safe

On Tuesday we had a fantastic assembly regarding the effects of bullying and how each student can take responsibility to see that it stops. Jim spoke at a few different middle schools in the area and his message is entertaining, but most importantly it's powerful. This is obviously a very serious topic and one that can impact students in our building and throughout our district. We were fortunate to have Jim and I hope you heard some great feedback from your student.

After the assembly students returned to their homerooms where their teacher led them through a dialogue about how they can be an "upstander" or ways bullying can be stopped here at Franklin.

Mix It Up Day @ Lunch

Friday we had our students participate in Mix It Up Day @ Lunch. Mix It Up is a national campaign launched by Teaching Tolerance over a decade ago, Mix It Up at Lunch Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. We provided the students random seats and for the most part around people they may normally not socialize with. We had a number of staff that helped foster conversations and we set out conversation starts. We hope to this more throughout the year. It was a great bookend to our assembly earlier in the week.

Next Sports' Season Begins

This week marked the start of our next sports' season. Boys' basketball and girls' swimming have began practice and will embark soon on their competition season. Friends of Franklin

Want to support Franklin? Check out our page that has information about our Friends of Franklin. We are extremely appreciative for the amount of support that our PTA has provided us. If you've seen our video announcement system in the school it was made partially possible because of the PTA purchasing 4 TVs.

Dance Marathon

Franklin will be hosting its tenth dance marathon on Friday, November 6th from 3:00-5:00 P.M. in the lower gym. It is open to ALL Franklin students and admission is only $5.00. For those new to Franklin, this is not your average middle school dance. No awkward slow dances, no waiting to be asked to dance, and no talent necessary! All students are expected to dance as fast as they can and as much as they can, with appropriate breaks for snacks of course!

For those unfamiliar with dance marathon as a charity fundraiser, this event is affiliated with the University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon and the Children’s Miracle Network. Funds raised help support pediatric cancer patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.
