Mask Update from Kate Mulligan
Earlier in the school year, I shared with all parents the following statement from the CA K-12 Covid Guidelines for Schools:
All California schools, public and private, must adhere to the CDPH requirement of masks for all persons indoors on school campuses. Masks are optional outdoors and subject to individual school decisions. Schools in our county will continue to review this update and will communicate expectations and practices for the 2021-2022 school year in the coming weeks.
At the beginning of the year, Chartwell made the decision to require masks outdoors given the Delta variant surge of the late summer and the large number of children on our campus who are not eligible for a vaccine. However, cases in Monterey County and across the state are dropping significantly, and through our testing program we have not identified any positive cases at Chartwell, which indicates that we do not have community spread.
As of Monday, October 4, 2021, we will make wearing a mask outdoors optional for all employees and students. Masking indoors at all times is still mandatory.
We will also still limit contact outdoors to students in the same cohort or cohort groupings by assigning play areas for morning drop-off and recess and isolate waiting areas at pick-up. This will limit outdoor unmasked exposure to the following groups:
Lower Lower School (yellow, light blue, red) - 30 students
Upper Lower School (purple, green and navy) - 30 students
Middle School (maroon, black, grey, royal blue) - 40 students
High School - 50 students.
If you as a parent would like your child to be masked outside, please contact Jodi Amaditz at jamaditz@chartwell.org or Jeff Morton at jmorton@chartwell.org so know so that we can support them.

High School Robotics Program for Chartwell Students
Is your high schooler interested in marketing and design? Entrepreneurship? Engineering or coding? Game strategy? All of these skills and more can be learned and practiced in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), and Chartwell students have the opportunity to join a community team that will practice mainly on our campus. Click here for a video about FRC.
Plus Ultra Robotics was founded in 2018 as a not-for-profit community team supported by Apple, DeWalt, Disney and FIRST - along with other local sponsors. We have competed in several qualifying and championship events, which involves building and coding a DIY robot to be remotely controlled on a field the size of a basketball court. During the preseason, until January, we are looking for new teammates from Chartwell. No experience is necessary, just interest, passion and dedication.
Practices will be primarily on Saturdays from 9:30am until 4pm. Students can join right away and would be helping mentor our FIRST Lego League Challenge and Explore teams at Chartwell, and learning tools and skills needed for the competitive season ahead. After kickoff in January, a frenzied but fun 6-week build season begins with longer practice hours, and teams across the globe will all be working on the same game strategies for a qualifying competition in March.
