An amazing example of the learning occurring!
All hands on!
Class News 2 - 10 - 17
In literacy this week, we read about the first English settlements in the New World. We discovered the mystery of the lost colony of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. To summarize what we learned, we used the Shrink-a-text strategy of Somebody wanted, but, so, then.. to remember what we learned.
In math, we ended our dividing decimals unit by engaging in real world problem solving involving money. We also had the opportunity to show what we know by taking the winter iReady assessment, which will be shared at PLPs.
In science, we are continued our learning in living systems exploring nutrient systems in plants and animals. We built a working model of the human heart, explored respiration by measuring our vital capacity (aka: How much hot air do they have?)
Learning Goals:
Time Traveling: I can summarize my learning about the early English Settlements to the New World.
Writing: I can generate ideas, construct a well written paragraph, focusing on using a transition word that is new to me.
Reading: I can summarize nonfiction through the strategy: Somebody, wanted, but, so, then. I identify the point of view of a video based on the word choice used.
Science: I can make observations, measurements, predictions and inferences about human circulation and respiration by model building.

Cardboard Boat Regatta STEM Challenge!
To apply this work in a SUPER FUN way, small tribes of fifth graders will work together with time and material constraints to build a floating vessel to float across the pool prior to swimming on Valentine's Day. The effort will take collaboration, communication, and cooperation in order to complete - qualities we are always encouraging! I have attached the video that inspired Mr. Macumber to float this idea the fifth grade way!

IT IS WINTER...
Snow boots and Snowpants are not required by all, only those who would like to play in the snow (once we have snow) during recess.
