Congratulations to Benjamin Franklin Middle School, Our Newest School to Watch

Big picture
Big picture
Congratulations to Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Valparaiso! The administration, staff, and students have worked together to earn their Designation as a School to Watch. They deserve to be proud and to enjoy their success. Like all our IN Schools to Watch, they are now a mentor school and welcome visits from other schools after April 15. They meet the criteria for academically excellent, developmentally responsive, and socially equitable. Please contact Shirley Wright if you are interested in STW.

Do you miss your own school days and celebrating Valentines Day? Once again this year, ICE (Indiana Connected Educators) is offering this opportunity to send educators an "ICEGram." (I sent one to myself just to test it out, and received it shortly after.)

Thanks to Shelly Terrell for permission to use this great post with several STEAM Valentine activities. From Virtual Valentines, to coding activities, to actually learning about the heart, there is a quite a variety. Shelly has many great resources on her website, offers free webinars, and is an accomplished author and presenter. (and a great follow on Twitter)

Math Framework Released: Even More on the Way

Big picture
DOE has released Phase One of the Math Framework, which puts resource guides in a searchable, interactive platform that includes the standards, academic vocabulary, articulation, and digital resources. Last week IASP hosted another group working on Phase Two for middle school math, which will ultimately include practical examples for every standard.

February #INspirEDlit Newsletter

Speaking of DOE, the February newsletter from the ELA specialists has been released. If you are not already on their mailing list, you may access it here. It contains resources for several February observances, including Black History Month. You may also sign up for their Literacy Community of Practice here.

RosieCon Book Festival for Teens, March 16

Big picture
This day-long festival at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis is designed for teens to have an opportunity to interact with popular, contemporary authors. While many of their books are aimed at high schoolers, several also have written for the middle level, including Meg Medina (recent winner of the Newbery Award), Lamar Giles, and Padma Venkatraman. Venkatraman's book The Bridge Home was just released last week, and has been described as "Oliver Twist meets Slumdog Millionaire." (I've read it-- outstanding choice for MS!) Complete details are on this website. Students under 15 are welcome, but should be accompanied by an adult.

Champions in the Middle Trainings

We realize that recent weather has wreaked havoc with trying to plan ahead. At this point, these trainings are available. If your district has a high school that is also interested, they may attend as well. Trainings will be from 9:30-11:30.

February 20: Homestead HS (Fort Wayne)

Thursday, February 21: Rochester MS (Oscar Haughs)

Tuesday, February 26: Tri-West MS (Travis Smith)

Wednesday, February 27: Lowell MS (Becky Pavich)

The training involves a staff member bringing at least 2-3 students to meet with staff & students at the host school. For more information, you may also check our website or contact Susie Highley
