Message from the Superintendent
It’s starting to feel a lot like back-to-school time! This week was all about class assignments, schedules, books, lockers, activities, meal planning, bus routes, and everything else that goes into welcoming our staff and students back to school.
Also this week our health and safety plan was approved by the School Board and submitted to the state, which can be found on the district website and in this newsletter. Our principals and their staff are continuing to improve upon the plan to ensure the most successful full time, in person experience for all students in our care.
Fall sport high school athletic teams began their official practices and Lake Oswego High kicked off student registrations. The rest of our schools (as many await the completion of bond construction!) will continue with registrations, supply drop offs, meet & greets, and Smart Start next week.
The countdown has begun -- only 10 sleeps before our first day of school! I look forward to seeing you all very soon.
Smart Start Aug. 26
All schools are hosting Smart Start Thursday, Aug. 26, from 1-3 p.m.
Smart Start is an opportunity specifically for our students with 504s and IEPs, and their parents and guardians, to make introductions with their teachers and to feel prepared for the start of school.
Teachers will be familiar with your student’s plan and accommodations. To help better know your students, please complete the attached one-page profile or create one on your own ahead of time, and give it to the teacher at the Smart Start introduction.
Also, to assist in your family’s preparation for the new school year, please click here for a Smart Start checklist for parents and guardians of students with 504s and IEPs.
Meals Are Free This Year
This school year LOSD is offering breakfast and lunch meals (one breakfast and one lunch per student per day) at no charge to all students. Breakfast meals will be served in grab-and-go style as students arrive to school. Lunch meals will offer healthy tasty entrees, fresh fruits and vegetables with a seasonal rotation of local farm produce and organic products when available.
For information about Food Services, please click here to visit our web page.

School Personnel, Volunteer Vaccinations Required
Governor Brown directed the Oregon Health Authority to issue a rule requiring all public and private school teachers, educators, support staff, and volunteers in K-12 schools to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 18, or six weeks from FDA approval, whichever is later.
The rule will be communicated by the Oregon Health Authority in the next few days and we will send out more information as it becomes available.
The rule will apply to all teachers, educators, support staff, coaches, and volunteers in K-12 schools, public and private. As with state employees and healthcare workers - religious and medical/disability related exceptions apply.
LODS employees and volunteers will need to show proof of vaccination to your school secretary.
Proof of Vaccination=Documentation provided by a tribal, federal, state or local government, or a health care provider, that includes an individual’s name, date of birth, type of COVID-19 vaccination given, date or dates given, depending on whether it is a one-dose or two-dose vaccine, and the name/location of the health care provider or site where the vaccine was administered. Documentation may include, but is not limited to, COVID-19 vaccination record card, a photocopy, digital picture, or patient portal.

Health & Safety Plan Approved

Decision making in LOSD is centered on protecting the health and safety of our community and ensuring students’ successful full time, in-person instruction.
Bus Routes Available Aug. 24
Student Transportation of America (STA) is developing routes and access points (bus stops) based on the 2,300 students registered by Friday, Aug. 13, 2021. If you missed the deadline, please refrain from contacting STA about registering your student at this time. Your student will be able to access bus transportation even if they did not get registered before the deadline.
Routes for each school will be available on Tuesday, Aug. 24; routes will be posted on the website, shared via email, text and social media. Included will be the shuttle stops for Palisades World Language School. At that time, please review the routes and if you cannot find a safe bus stop for your student to access bus transportation, then email or call STA. Until then, STA is not able to respond to registration requests as they need to focus on getting the routes completed on time.

School Resource Officer Update
We are pleased to announce our School Resource Officers will be adorning a new polo uniform this fall. We will also be following through on the board directive to form a School Safety Committee with school site administrators, LOSD Safety and Security administrator John Parke, LOSD Equity, Inclusion, and Access Administrator Teresa Sanchez, LOSD Psychologist Dr. Jim Sanders, and LOPD School Resource Officers to evaluate needs and develop a district school safety plan. This group will start meeting next week and we will keep the community updated with progress.
Virtual LO Waitlist
Sign ups are now closed for 2021-22 Virtual LO.
If you wish to be put on the waitlist, please email lisa.oliva@loswego.k12.or.us. Your email should include:
- Student first and last name
- Resident school
- Grade level for 2021-22 School Year
- If your student has a 504 accommodation or Individualized Education Plan
- Parent-guardian email
There is currently no guarantee that students on the waitlist will be enrolled in Virtual LO.
Verify Student Info Before Returning to School
LOSD needs parents-guardians of all students enrolled for the 2021-22 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab.
This ensures schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your address or contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, contact your student's school. For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website or contact your student's school.
What's New at Community School?

SafeOregon
Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
