EL Happenings
Volume 4 Issue 7
Teacher Feature
In today's lesson, the students are participating in an Econoland Simulation where the students have to "sell" Capital Goods, Human Resources, and Natural Resources in order to turn around and "purchase" Econo cards. This helped give students hands-on experience with supply and demand both as a consumer and as a business. Negotiations were heard, businesses failed or thrived, and students were really thinking about ways to acquire the most money or cards depending on the individual goals. The SIOP component of Practice and Application was implemented to a high degree with this simulation as students used hands-on materials and manipulatives to practice using new content knowledge, the activities allowed students to apply content and language knowledge, AND students integrated all language skills. Every lesson is not built to be a simulation, but when used effectively, we watched a phenomenal foundation be built for Mr. Dye and Mr. Mang to reference concepts for many lessons in the future. Thanks for allowing us to come see amazing student learning and SIOP implemented at the high school level. We have amazing administrators, teachers, tutor/translators, instructional assistants and students in Perry Township - #wegrowkids!

Compliance Corner
ELs are required to have equal access to the full range of district programs, including special education, Title I, gifted and talented programs, and nonacademic and extracurricular activities.
Federal law is violated if:
- students are excluded from effective participation in school because of their inability to speak and understand the language of instruction;
- national origin minority students are inappropriately assigned to special education classes because of their lack of English proficiency;
- programs for students with limited English proficiency are not designed to teach them English as soon as possible, or if these programs operate as a dead-end track; or
- parents whose English proficiency is limited do not receive school notices or other information in a language they can understand.
If an English learner has a suspected disability, referral and evaluation should happen in a timely manner, as required for any other student. Special education evaluation for an English learner is only appropriate if consistent, objective monitoring conducted by EL and general education staff indicates that the student is significantly struggling and that the student’s academic struggles are not related to English proficiency.
Perry Township Represented at 13th Annual Latinx Fellowship Day at the Statehouse
The Latinx Fellows Day Program aims to promote diversity in the Statehouse. The event is organized by State Representative Maria Candelaria Rearden. She states that “We are thrilled to see such a talented and devoted group of students walking the halls of the Statehouse. This young, diverse group of high schoolers brings a much needed unique and valuable perspective grounded in the knowledge and experience rooted in their Latino identities.”
In addition to learning more about the statehouse, students were also able to see how a bill becomes a law, as well as, the unique opportunity to meet Governor Holcomb!
