Burnette Books

January 2014

Welcome Back!

We thought we'd start out the New Year with a little friendly competition... We have a lot of Michael P. White drawings here in the Media Center, more than we can use! So we thought we would give one drawing to one teacher on each grade level. The teacher whose class has the highest percentage of participation in our school wide reading program will win the drawing. If there is a tie, we will put the names in a hat and draw. Sped teachers, we will put you together as a grade level since you have similar class sizes. And special area teachers or anyone without a homeroom, if you send Mrs. C an email saying, "I'm in!", we'll do a special areas drawing as well.

Brand new year, brand new happenings here in the Media Center! Take a peek at what else is happening in January!

Media News

Let Them Have Books!

The new checkout policies are in place! It's been a very busy few days here in the Media Center, and we are loving it! The students are very excited about the increased checkouts, and the magazines have been flying off the shelves! If you could please reinforce to students that the magazines are like books- no writing in them, please! I know the puzzles and games in the magazines are tempting. Also, it has been wonderful to see how many of you are really reinforcing "just right" books for your students- encouraging them to choose a book that is on their level. Please let me know if we can assist you with that in any way!

Time to Buy the Books...

A big thank you to all the teachers who stopped by the non-fiction book display and gave some feedback. I have our "wish list" and I am working on ordering as many of the books that you wanted as I can.

One of my main goals for our Media Center this year is to increase our fiction collection, so if you have a favorite that is not on our shelves, please send me an email. It's great when you can recommend a favorite to a student.

Help Us Help You!

We have been getting a lot of requests to pull books, and we are happy to do this for you. Please remember, if you have a lot of books you would like for an upcoming unit, give me at least one week notice to pull those books for you.

I am also continuing to put together the resource lists for each grade level. If you find items on your list that you don't think are age or grade appropriate, please let me know so we can delete them and update your lists. We want these to be truly helpful resources.

Website of the Month

I had to feature this website since I have been using it quite a bit over the past few months. If you haven't checked out "TeachersPayTeachers," I definitely recommend it. I avoided it for a while because I don't pay for anything if I can help it, but you can find a lot of free resources. Also, when you sign up, you get 10 free featured downloads each month. I have scored lots of free fonts, clip art, borders, posters, mini-books... it's been wonderful! They have an adorable poster for MLK day for our younger group that I recently downloaded for free.

We also have so many talented and creative folks on staff... why not post some of your creations on the website and earn some extra money?

MLK Day- January 20

Fireside Reading

One of my favorite things we did in the last specials rotation was to take a day and actually READ in the library! Craziness, I know! Who would have thought? It was so much fun! I want to encourage the kids to slow down and actually view this space as a place to relax and read. We're hoping to make some changes to the layout in the future to encourage more use of the Media Center.
