WBMS Friday Notes
10-16-20
Reflections from Ms. Williams
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
Phase 5 is off to a wonderful start! Our students at home are adjusting to keeping their cameras on, our students in the building are adjusting to interacting with more students in their classrooms, and our teachers are adjusting to teaching half of their students online and half in their classrooms. It is a definitely a different way to teach and learn, but I am super proud of our students and teachers for their efforts.
Although we are still in October, we are gearing up for Kindness Month in November. Next week we will officially kick off our school’s undertaking to become an official “No Place for Hate” certified school, and we will celebrate National Unity Day on Wednesday by wearing orange and discussing how to stand up to bullying of any kind. Moving into November, we will begin with Wellness Week (Nov. 2nd - 6th). Our motto this year is “Be Well. Be Kind. 2020”. Each day we will host different activities for our students focused on combining wellness and kindness. During the entire month of November, students and staff will have an opportunity to complete daily acts of compassion listed on our kindness calendar like – “Tell someone you are thankful for them, call a friend to check in with them, and spread good news”. Students and staff will share pictures of themselves completing the task, which will be featured on the morning announcements every Friday.
Additionally, WBMS is partnering with Jordyn’s Summer T-Shirt Project. Students, families, and staff can begin ordering the kindness shirt (see details in this week’s Friday Notes); 20% of the money will be donated to our Community Cupboard, a WBMS effort to ensure all of our families have school supplies, hygiene products, and food. November 13th is National World Kindness Day, and we are asking all students and staff to wear their kindness shirts, PJ bottoms, and bring/donate non-perishable foods to help families in need. We will be donating the non-perishable food items to North Fulton Community Charities.
Lastly, one of our 6th grade students is spearheading a project to send shoeboxes filled with gifts to children across the globe, and she is asking that each WBMS student bring in one item during the month of November and place it in his/her Compass shoe box. Items like small toys, toothbrushes, and other items will fill each Compass box and be sent to recipients who normally do not receive gifts.
Thank you in advance for supporting our schoolwide efforts to spread kindness at WBMS, throughout the Alpharetta community, and across the globe.
In collaboration -

Congratulations to Ms. Allenson!
Winner of the Ed and Millie McCall Teacher Appreciation Gift!
The Georgia Theta Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa organization would like to honor Ms. Allenson with a monetary gift for her personal use. These gifts are made possible by the Matthews family, including Linda Matthews, a member of Theta and retired WBMS educator, and her daughter, Ashley, who was a student at WBMS. Inspired by her own love of teaching, as well as that of her parents, Ed and Millie McCall, Linda has generously offered to endow this gift, which is NOT to be used for educational purposes, including graduate school, but to foster a sense of appreciation and provide a means of personal refreshment and rejuvenation.

Parents and guardians of Webb Bridge, Taylor Road, and Hopewell Middle as well as Alpharetta and Chattahoochee High School students, are invited to attend a digital citizenship learning session on Wednesday, October 28th, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in a Microsoft Teams Live event. Detective Laurie Nicholson has worked for the Alpharetta Police Department since 2002; during this time, she has worked with the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Metro Atlanta Child Exploitation Task Force with the Atlanta FBI Field Office. In this session she will address some of the currently trending online safety issues, including social media, instant messaging and gaming systems, along with tips and tricks for parents to help students navigate the online other-world. Due to the sensitive content of the information shared, this is an adult-only event, so please note that you may want to plan to participate privately at home. This Common Sense Media article outlines some concerns related to online privacy and children.
Fulton County Public Library Cards – Free for our students! The benefits of having a student FCPL card include access to OverDrive eBooks and audiobooks which may be linked to their school Sora account and eReadKids as well as registration options for Hoopla and two free online tutoring programs (with the full FCPL account). Our ELA teachers are sharing in a NearPod session the benefits of owning a Fulton County Public Library Card and how to get (or renew) cards. Hopefully, your students have an account and maybe even a card. If not, this is a great opportunity for our students to receive theirs by way of our Media Center; just use the form in this Sway to apply for an online account and submit for a full card account (Alpharetta library is partnering with us to provide full cards). If your child is under age 13, should you choose to have your child not receive a full library account with access to all levels of materials, an online opt-out form is provided here; please submit any opt-outs by October 20th as we will forward the request for full accounts to the public library soon. If you have questions about this program, please contact Nan Brown, our media specialist, at brownnt@fultonschools.org.
Fall Reading Challenges
Webb Bridge WON the Ga Tech Buzzer Readers competition in 2019; do YOU want to be part of a repeat? We had the highest number of pages read for all middle schools in metro Atlanta who participated, first place seventh grade class (Ms. Boltz), and first place seventh grade student (Sophia L). Log the pages you’re reading on the Form in this Sway to help us “score” a win again! Do you like to earn badges? Complete the Fulton County Public Library Fall Reading Challenge by reading and listening to books and completing other activities. (Need books or magazines to read? We have info on how to get those, too!)
WBMS Media Center – at curbside!
Students may now check out books from the WBMS Media Center – at curbside! Locate and hold titles in Destiny Discover, then watch for an email from the Media Center that your books are ready. Pickup times are between 7:45 a.m. and 4 p.m. on school days outside the media center (traffic circle just past front office entrance). Dial 470-254-8755 and we will bring books to you outside. Books may be returned any time to the secure book drop just outside the media center. Please contact Ms. Brown at brownnt@fultonschools.org with any questions.
Announcing The Community Cupboard
Do you know a family in need at WBMS?
Please reach out to our counseling staff so we can find ways to help.
We are so happy to announce our new PTA and SGC initiative, the Community Cupboard. This will provide emergency necessities for families in our school experiencing hardship. Over the last 2 weeks our community has rallied behind this project and provided many school supplies so all children can start the year off on the right foot. Now we will work on stocking out cupboard with household items of need.
Please consider making a donation! Current needs can be found HERE. We also have an Amazon Wish List.
