How the idea worked with year 11
The idea is to prodive students with an A3 sheet for writing better answers to exam questions. Paul observed a year 11 lesson where Zach Homer commented that the topic words really helped him remember the important parts of the subject, without having to refer to his class notes.
There is also a PEEL structure for writing exam answers, which the year 11s discussed and referred to throughout an exam writing section of the lesson.
Geography are now developing one of these learning maps for their new topic of Rural Environments as a number of geographers were also in Kevin's RE lesson and they have asked for this when tackling geography exam questions.
Ask Kevin for the template and try it in your subject.
Literacy in Humanities
Scrabble mats
Geography have taken this further by adding a team score by adding all infidel scores and dividing by the number of students on the table, then taking the average points for the words as the final score. This has really challenged their communication and numeracy skills too. If you want the scrabble mat template, just ask Paul for a copy via email.
Just a thought....
Display a quote, like the one above, as a starter or point of discussion in a lesson. Change them regularly.
