VACDES: Proudly Building on the Past to Prepare Students for the Future

At VACDES, the teachers and staff are proud of its historic presence in the school's neighborhood. At the same time, the school embraces the challenge of preparing students for the world of the mid-21st Century--and beyond.

We are a staff dedicated to helping each student grow to her or his maximum potential academically, physically, emotionally, and socially to meet local and global challenges both now and in the future.

VACDES is excited to launch two spectacular programs in Kindergarten this year. Through our Dual Immersion program, students will be taught 50% of the time in Spanish and 50% of the time in English. The students will continue with Dual Immersion instruction as they progress through the rest of their years at VACDES with a goal that, by the time they leave us at the end of 4th grade, the students in the Dual Immersion program will read, write, speak, and listen in two languages: English and Spanish.

The rest of the Kindergarten students will be in our brand new Kinderlab program. Kinderlab is Kindergarten that brings Learning Absent Boundaries. Literally, the boundary (a wall divider) between two kindergarten classrooms has been removed to create a large classroom in which two certified teachers will instruct their students together. This provides opportunities for grouping the students in creative ways throughout the day. The teachers will provide innovative project-based learning enhanced by collaborative teaching.

Grades Pre-K and 1-4 will continue their fantastic student-centered instruction while pursuing the goal that every child will meet or exceed grade level expectations every year.

VACDES has a strong commitment to fostering an active and physically fit lifestyle for our students--beginning each day with opportunities for either Open Gym (one day a week for each grade level) or Running Club (four days a week for each grade level), continuing with active recess time for all, and ending, whenever possible during the school year, with intramurals in running, wrestling, and a variety of other activities.

Cultural Arts take precedence at VACDES as well. Our students participate in music concerts, regional chorus (grade 4), and an annual arts and science fair for all grade levels.

STEM is an important focus with weekly lessons for all grades K-4 students in our beautiful STEM lab.

We are proud to host the Winchester Public Schools ACE program which is open to all 3rd and 4th grade students in the division who have been found eligible for gifted education services. Teachers certified in gifted education provide instruction that fosters innovative, higher level thinking connecting differentiated content in science and social studies to what students are learning in English/Language Arts and mathematics.

Parent and family involvement are valued at VACDES. An incredible PTO provides support throughout the year through enriching programs. Volunteerism is encouraged. Please contact your child's teacher or someone in the office if you are interested in volunteering.

VACDES is a treasure--for Winchester, our state, our nation, and our world. I encourage you to visit and see how you can become involved in a dynamic, creative, and innovative school.
