Black History Month
The Clinton 12
You may have heard the story of Arkansas’s heroic Little Rock Nine, a group of African American students who integrated Central High School in 1957, but did you know they were not the first secondary students to take these courageous steps?
On August 27, 1956, twelve African American young people from Clinton, Tennessee, became the first students to desegregate a public high school in the American South.
The brave students who entered Clinton High School on that historical day and would thereafter be known as The Clinton 12 were: Maurice Soles, Anna Theresser Caswell, Alfred Williams, Regina Turner Smith, William R. Latham, Gail Ann Epps Upton, Ronald Gordon “Poochie” Hayden, JoAnn Crozier Allen Boyce, Robert Thacker, Bobby Cain, Minnie Ann Dickey Jones, and Alvah McSwain.
This historical action and the turbulent events of the next few months made national news at the time. Sadly, the story has been all but forgotten, overshadowed and overlooked through the passage of time, except by those who were there.
The Clinton 12 story is an account of how one diverse community set aside their differences and came together to do the right thing, both legally and morally.
This defining moment in the Civil Rights movement deserves not only to be preserved, but also to receive national recognition for its role in the ongoing struggle for the equality of all Americans.

RAMdom Student of the Week
Titan
Titan is becoming one of our stand-out 8th grade students. He likes to play football, watch basketball, play games with his brother, and work out. He is working hard toward his goal of having a successful football career at ORHS. Titan is a leader on and off the field.
Titan is invested in our orchestra program as well as several of our STEM courses here at RMS. He can be seen in the STEM Night teaser video from last week. Titan said, "STEM, for me, is the best program in the school. The teachers make sure you are up-to-date and ... in a good position in your work."
We wish him the best and thank him for being an inspiration and role model at RMS.
Volunteer of the Month
Vidya Barnes
Vidya got plugged in at Robertsville through her husband who is a big community supporter. They are both invested in our efforts to be a "Great STEM School."
Mrs. Barnes is originally from India, but she has lived all over the United States. She and her family relocated here from Seattle three years ago.
We are extremely lucky to have supportive community members like Vidya that make it all about our kids!
Club of the Week
Running Rams
The Running Rams club, led by Mrs. Best and Mrs. Sanford, meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 3:45 pm. Running Rams is open to students in all grades and of all ability levels. We split into two separate groups – a walking group and a running group. We sometimes stay on campus and run or walk on the track or cross country course. At other times we run or walk on the sidewalks around the school. In order to participate in Running Rams, students must pick up a permission packet from the Counseling Center and return the forms signed & completed prior to participation. Students are to change clothes after school and report to the chorus room to sign in and stretch. Our goal is to be outside running or walking by 3 pm and we finish and sign out by 3:45pm. Students must be picked up in the bus loop behind the school at 3:45 pm (unless they walk home). Students are not required to be present every Tuesday and Thursday and students may come and go throughout the year based on involvement in other clubs and sports. We will cancel based on weather if it is raining or 40 degrees or below (we will generally take a seasonal break from Running Rams in December & January due to temperatures). If we cancel, parents can opt to receive a text message from Running Rams to inform them of the cancellation. Students do not need special attire for Running Rams, but we do encourage them to dress appropriately for the weather. If your child is interested in Running Rams, we would love to have them join us!
