IREAD 3 Parent Guidance

To prepare our students, teachers have been working hard to teach the Indiana third grade standards. It is our goal to help all of our students reach their potential and to be successful readers by third grade.

Kindergarten Round Up

Please share this information with your friends, relatives and neighbors who might have a child who will be five years old by August 1, 2023.

ROUND UP is March 7 from 4-7:00 pm. We are happy and excited to welcome a new crew of kindergarten students for the 23-24 school year.

Second and Third Grade Students to take IREAD March 6-17

IREAD-3 is an online, timed, multiple-choice only assessment consisting of three separate test segments. The first segment measures foundational reading skills, including phonics and vocabulary. The remaining two segments assess students’ ability to silently read and comprehend nonfiction and literary texts. IREAD-3 is administered to all third graders enrolled in accredited Indiana schools through the Indiana Department of Education.

Our second and third grade students will be taking IREAD on March 6-10 and makeups on March 13-17th. Please make sure your students are well rested and please avoid scheduling appointments during the morning hours of March 6-10. As you are most likely aware, this is a high stakes test for our third grade students. Students in third grade MUST pass the test in order to be promoted to the fourth grade. Teachers and staff members have been working diligently to teach the Indiana third grade standards and to help prepare our children for this test. Last year we had a 93% pass rate for third grade.

In addition, last year was the first year the IDOE allowed second graders to take the IREAD 3 test. We had 50% of our second graders pass the third grade reading test. We saw several benefits to allowing the second graders to participate in this testing including:

1. This is NOT high stakes for second graders. Second graders will not be penalized or retained if they do not pass the IREAD 3 test.

2. Edgelea received data from the IDOE regarding interventions and supports for our upcoming third grade students based on the second grade IREAD results.

3. Our current third grade students will be less apprehensive regarding the test because they are already familiar with the test from last year.

The very best preparation our parents can do to help ensure that your child is learning to read is SIMPLY make sure your child is reading for 20 minutes each evening. Especially over the summer....read, read, read! Kindergarten, first and second grade parents....now is the time. Don't delay.

Reading Expectations

All Edgelea students should spend 20 minutes a night either reading or being read to...or a combination. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS READING 20 MINUTES NIGHTLY!

Please continue to encourage your child to read ALL YEAR long, even over holidays and breaks. It makes a HUGE difference in their reading skills/levels. Consider visiting the the Tippecanoe Public Library. Library cards are free and there are NO overdue fees. Show your children that you love books, too. It is a "life-changer" but the time to start is NOW. Often parents wonder, "what can I do to help my child succeed?" This is the answer. Read to your children. Have them read. Share the love of reading with them. It makes school and learning so much easier and enjoyable. Set them up for SUCCESS!

Every School Day Counts

Why does attendance matter? A lot of research has been done and the findings are not surprising! Students who attend school regularly are able to learn more, have fewer discipline problems, develop better study habits and often are more successful than students who do not.

The last few years, due to Covid, we were much more relaxed regarding attendance. However, this year, we will strictly be following LSC policy regarding attendance.

Our goal is to work together with families to help improve attendance. Please help your child have the opportunity to become academically successful by having them at school on time each and every day. It's one of the most important things you can do for your child!

  1. Anytime a student has an exempt absence, the documentation must be brought to the school to be filed within three school days of the students return.
  2. After a student has reached 6 absences, the parents will receive an attendance letter from the principal notifying the parent of attendance concerns. “Exempt” absences identified in 1-13 above in this section do not count toward this total of 6 absences.
  3. After the student has reached 9 absences, the principal will send notification to the Office of Elementary Education.Parents will be notified of the state attendance law and further actions that may be taken if attendance problems continue.Parents are expected to contact the school principal to set up a conference regarding their student’s attendance. The principal may report the student’s absences to Truancy Mediation for further action. “Exempt” Absences identified in 1-13 above in this section do not count toward this total of 9 absences.
  4. Habitual absences, 12 or greater, will be reported to the Truancy Mediation Officer (Truancy Mediation – Tippecanoe County Superior Court #3) for the consideration of the juvenile court. It will also be filed with Child Protective Services as possible educational neglect. A child can be retained and not promoted to the next grade level.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! We can't teach your children if they are not here!
