BLPA Weekly Update
January 20, 2023
Greetings Stallion Families!
This week flew by; the snow day and delay certainly helped! Hopefully our students and families got some extra rest and feel rejuvenated for the weeks ahead. The days have started to get longer, which means more opportunities to enjoy sunlight! Did you know that more exposure to sunlight leads to better sleep, reduces stress, and can strengthen immune systems? May you and your families enjoy the sunshine, especially on these cold winter days.
Warmly,
BLPA Leadership Team

2023 BLPA Job Shadow Day Friday, February 3, 2023
At BLPA, we strongly believe that career planning and exploration should begin as early as middle school. Therefore, we prioritize career exploration and planning so students can align their education with their career interests. A major step in career planning is exploration. Career exploration improves their knowledge of career options, provides our students a path to pursue, motivates student growth, and allows them access to the working world.
For the month of January, Mrs. Welch, our 8th grade counselor, will teach career exploration lessons. She will conduct 2 one hour lessons where students will take an online interest profiler to discover careers specifically for them. Once they have discovered a career interest, students will research each career.
As a result, we are inviting all 8th grade students to participate in our first annual JOB SHADOW DAY. On Friday, February 3, 2023, all 8th grade students will be off campus shadowing an adult in any career field. This is a REGULAR school day. If the student does not participate AND does NOT come to school, he or she will be marked absent.
Every 8th grader will choose ONE professional adult to shadow for an entire day. We encourage them to find an adult who is currently in a field of interest. For example, if a student has interest in pursuing a career in plumbing, he or she would find a plumber who is willing to allow them to shadow them for the day. The student can shadow a parent, family member, family friend, etc. No students will be allowed to shadow an adult at Banning Lewis Prep. The students must be off campus.
While shadowing, the student will complete an assignment, take at least one picture, and be prepared to share his or her experiences on Monday, February 6th. The assignment will be provided to the student the day prior. The assignment is worth 100 points. Parents are responsible for transportation.
Students are required to dress appropriately according to the job’s policy.
If a student chooses NOT to participate in job shadow day, he or she will come to school and complete a career exploration research project. The project will allow students to explore multiple career options, discover their strengths and weaknesses, and plan a path to pursue.
We are extremely excited to present this opportunity to our 8th grade students. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
We are hosting a Middle School Career on Wheels Event. This event will further the career exploration of our grade 6-8 students. It will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, from 9:00 am – 3:05 pm, with a backup date of April 25, 2023. The backup date will be used in case of inclement weather.
This event will be held outdoors in the carpool lane and will showcase your vehicle to demonstrate different career fields to students. We ask our attendees to be prepared to engage with students by answering questions and demonstrating your vehicle and career related equipment/tools. This will be a full day with our students with around 450 students rotating through the event. Please fill out this form if you are interested in attending or would like more information.
