The Affect of Various on Enzymes
James Birdsong III Period: 5
Introduction
Enzymes are globular proteins that break down what goes into your stomach. They act as catalysts, which speed up the process of chemical reactions without being destroyed or altered during the process. the temperature of the enzyme is extremely important because if its not in the right temperature range then the enzyme can denature and not function properly.
Research Question
Does the temperature effect the rate of reaction?
Hypothesis
Explanatory Hypothesis: As we increase the enzymatic activity, the reaction rate increases.
Prediction: I predicted that the rate of reaction will increase.
Null Hypothesis: The enzyme concentration will not affect the enzymatic activity.
If you increase the temperature, then there will be a significant change.
Methods and Materials
- LabQuest
- Vernier Gas Pressure Sensor
- 10 mL Graduated Cylinder
- 250 mL Beaker of Water
- 3% H2O2
- Ice Water Bath
- Thermometer
- Disposable Pipettes
Result
After the data was concluded, my hypothesis was correct. As the temperature increased the rate of reaction increased as well.
Discussion
As the temperature increases, the rate of activity went up. When the temperature was 0-5 degrees Celsius the rate of reaction was at .00867 (kPa/s) whereas when the temperature was at 20-25 degrees Celsius the rate of reaction was 0.12498 (kPa/s). as the temperature increased the rate of reaction increased as well.
