The Power of the Selfie Center
Using Technology to Build Meaningful Reflection in Literacy
Selfie:
How Does The Selfie Center Work?
- Center can be guided or independent depending on the students’ readiness
- Goal of the center is to eventually be an independent experience
- Center opens as an option during the independent reading portion of readers’ workshop
- Students typically spend 5-10 minutes at the center
- Center is available for 3-4 students during the independent reading time
- Teachers need a system for turn-taking at the selfie center
A Selfie becomes a powerful tool for building understanding about how we view ourselves and how we are viewed by others
Metacognition- thinking about and reflecting upon one's own thinking
reconsideration + new understanding + metacognition =

About Our Team
Lab Teacher Cohort
Each school community involved in this work supports a specific style of professional development: a Lab Cohort. Lab Teachers meet frequently with one another, and also with the consultant. They are not experts in the literacy work; they just agree to take risks in their practice. Selfie centers grew out of a desire to capture students demonstrating meta-cognition
