MKG Messenger December 6, 2019
The Principal's Office
WOW...it's December!!!!! You can feel the excitement in the air!!! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and now we are moving into the magical time of year. We had our first (and hopefully the last...LOL) snow day this week!! I was very excited to be a Guest Reader in Miss Gillis's class on Wednesday. There are many activities going on throughout the school during the next couple of weeks.
As part of the district focus on Social/Emotional Learning, the teachers attended a training with Judi Johnson from Effective Effort Consulting on the topic of Fostering Executive Function Skills in the Elementary Classroom: A Guide to Practical Strategies. We look forward to continue our worth with Ms. Johnson when she visits MKG.
Upcoming Events:
December 9 - 11 - Holiday Shoppe during school
December 10 - PTA Meeting, 6:00 PM
December 13 - Report Cards go home
Grade 1
In first grade we will be starting our next unit in ELA focusing on folktales and opinion writing. Students will learn to identify the characteristics of folktales. We will discuss character traits and compare different versions of traditional folktales. Over the next few weeks, we will read stories that have the Gingerbread Man as the main character. Our children will learn to express their opinion of characters and provide evidence for their opinion. In math students are developing strategies to solve subtraction equations to twenty.
Grade 2
Grade 2 students have wrapped up our ELA unit “Animals and their Changing Habitats”, by writing an essay and creating a poster on the Polar Bear and its Arctic habitat. We are starting our third Unit of Study, “Fairytales and Folktales”. Students are sure to enjoy this reading and writing unit, as they read and listen to some of their favorite stories. Students will be learning to find the central message in these stories. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning about all of the December holidays, such as Las Posadas, Santa Lucia, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas. It will be an exciting time for our students, but there is plenty of learning to be done!
Grade 3
Grade three classes were lucky to have beautiful weather and helpful chaperones for our field trip to Plimouth Plantation during the week of Thanksgiving. Students were able to experience a Wampanoag village and listen to Native American people explaining their connection to nature for survival. Children also visited the Pilgrim village and toured homes and gardens of the time period. We are so thankful for the MKG PTA and families for helping to fund this enrichment trip that brings our in-class learning about the 1620s to life for our students!
Grade 4
December is upon us and, as we get ready for the holiday break, our fourth graders are diving into division using compatible numbers and multiplication to estimate quotients and determine if their answers are reasonable. Knowledge of factors and multiples is key to problem solving and we encourage students to continue practicing basic facts. We are exploring the topic of immigration through read alouds and discussion. Students are experimenting with a variety of genres in writing and are excited to make choices about topics that they are passionate about.
Grade 5
Last week, in addition to enjoying our Thanksgiving Break, Mrs. Marinelli’s and Mrs. Kuketz’s classes went to the Middleborough Public Library to begin their Famous Revolutionary Figures research project with the help of Miss Amanda in the Children’s Library. The students also participated in a 4 Spheres of Earth Walk. The students loved having a snow day and returned from it ready to learn. All of the fifth graders are eagerly learning about the importance and accessibility of water on our planet in preparation for our STEAM Week activities.
