Chat 'n Chew for 1st and 2nd Graders
What is Chat ‘n Chew?
Chat ‘n Chew is a program that gives children the chance to listen to adults read books and discuss these great reads with their friends. Parents volunteer twice a month to read to a small group of children. Each Chat ‘n Chew group will meet during lunch and while the children eat, their parent sponsor will read one or two picture books. After they read each book, the children will discuss the book. The books can be brought in from home, checked out from the public library, or borrowed from Sunflower’s media center.
Who can participate?
Chat ‘n Chew is a program for 1st and 2nd graders (3rd and 4th graders have the chance to participate in Novel Navigators). Students and parents need to sign the form below and return it to Mrs. Rains in the LIT Lab by Friday, January 25th. Chat ‘n Chew groups will be formed and announced the week of February 11th and will begin meeting the 1st week in March.
How can I become a sponsor?
Fill out the Google form (click on the link below) Select which day(s) that work best for you. 1st grade eats lunch from 10:50-11:20 and 2nd grade eats from 12:00-12:30. I will be happy to help you select great read-alouds. I will also provide each coach with a list of discussion starter questions. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. can also sponsor a group!
Please RSVP for the 2nd Grade Family Fun Fitness Night!

Online Absence Reporting is Available Once Again!
Due to many requests about this missing link to the Online Absence Reporting, I wanted to make sure it was one of the first things added back on the Sunflower website.
Parents have two different options to report an absence for your student. You can report the absence electronically via the Skyward Family Access. You can gain access to this link by clicking on MENU, and then clicking on Online Absence Reporting at the bottom of the menu (see photo below). If you do not remember your login information, please contact the office at 913-856-3700 or email jacobsc@usd231.com.
You can also call into the Attendance line at 913-856-3749 and leave a message for the office.
And as always, if your student will miss any days due to an out of town trip, please email Dr. Jones ahead of time at jonesja@usd231.com for preapproval.
Thank you again for your patience while we complete the transition to the new Sunflower website!
We are a Latex Free School!
Sunflower Elementary has been proclaimed a Latex Free School. We strive to make Sunflower a safe place for all students. In order to ensure a safe environment, we need to make sure latex items like balloons are not allowed in our building.
Please refrain from sending anything containing latex into the building (gloves, balloons) even if there are not latex allergies in your student’s grade level. Latex reactions can be contact and airborne, so even breathing in latex particles in the air can cause an anaphylactic reaction.
All the gloves and band-aides from the health room are latex free. Small novelty erasers and items usually have a low content of latex. The main thing is no latex balloons.
Please understand that we want our school to be a safe and healthy environment for all of our students, and with your support and cooperation, we can achieve our goal. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at any time.

The Sunflower Site Council will be meeting at 6 pm in the library on the following dates: 9/11/18, 11/13/18, 2/5/19, 4/9/19.

Kansas schools are required to establish site councils composed of the principal, teachers and other school personnel, parents, business representatives, and other community groups.
Site councils have a responsibility to provide advice and counsel in the following areas: evaluating district and school performance goals and objectives,
determining methods to meet those goals and objectives,
and other areas as requested by the board of education.
Remember, the work of the site council is advisory only;
it makes recommendations, not decisions.
