What families can expect the first week or two of school
The first couple of weeks will be bumpy as everyone learns their schedules and the expected procedures. Please expect delays, especially with school pick-ups and bus drop-offs with the elementary students. Students will likely be 15-25 minutes later getting home from the bus the first day or two. Those times will get MUCH better in just a few days.
Families can help decrease delays by doing the following:
- READ every school-related email CAREFULLY for specific details (Do not assume there haven't been changes to procedures.)
- Ask questions when you need clarity.
- Be sure that each of your children knows HOW they should be dismissed at the end of the day. Parents of K-3 students should let their child's teacher know the dismissal plans BEFORE the first day of school for the first 8 days. (This is the biggest reason there is a delay at the end of the day.)
- Be on time and follow drop-off and pick-up procedures as they have been sent to you
- Follow the directions from staff who are directing traffic.
- Have your child ready and on time at the bus stop - OR
- At morning drop-off, do not wait until your child is in front of the building to let them out. Each building has a safe zone for the students to exit from their vehicles. When several students exit in the safe zone at the same time, the line moves much quicker and safer. Have your child ready to exit the vehicle as soon as you are in the safe departure zone. This means students open the door on the PASSENGER SIDE and EXIT as SOON AS THE VEHICLE STOPS SAFELY. (EPS staff members will help open doors for those who need assistance.) - Avoid distracted driving while on school campus - including using cell phones.
- Call the school's office with messages about any changes to your child's dismissal plans at least 1 hour before the end of the school day. Do not email the front office staff or call/email your child's teacher with these changes. (EPS has a special voicemail line for these messages. They will receive them.)
