Integer Operations
Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing Integers
Rules for Adding Integers
If the integers have different signs you subtract and stay with the sign of the higher integer.
For example:
Same sign 4 + 4 = 8
Different sign -4 + 6 = 2
Same sign -1 + -1 = -2
Rules for Subtracting Integers
If the integers have different signs you subtract and stay with the sign of the higher integer.
For example:
Same signs 4 - 4 = 0
Different signs -8 - 6 = -14
Same sign -7 - (-3) = -4
Rules for Multiplying Integers
If the integers have unlike signs the answer is negative.
For example:
Same signs 5 x 5 = 25
Different signs -8 x 4 = -32
Same signs -6 x -4 =24
Rules for Dividing Integers
If the integers have unlike signs the answer is negative.
For example :
Same signs 10 / 2 = 5
Different signs -36 / 6 = -6
Same signs -9 / -3 = 3
