Mrs. McGeorge's Super Second Grade

Week of January 11

What We're Learning

Reading and Writing

We are working on non-fiction this quarter! We have discussed the differences between non-fiction and fiction already, but now we will be diving into various text features found in non-fiction books. We will also talk about writing in the context of science, and we will begin to explore lab reports.

We have learned how to plot data on line plots and read them, but now we will make them independently! We will also start learning about a new kind of graph: a pictograph. We will learn to create and read them as well.

Social Studies

We are beginning a unit of continents and oceans. Second graders should be able to name the seven continents and four oceans by the end of this unit, but we will also learn about various cultures found around the world. We will be having a quiz on labeling continents and oceans in a couple of weeks time. I will update you when I finalize a date, and I will provide a study sheet in Take Home Folders soon.

In Other News...

  • Six Flags Read to Succeed packets went home the week of Thanksgiving with an opportunity for your child to read and earn a free ticket to St. Louis' Six Flags park. If you need a new packet, please let me know. If your child would like to participate, his/her packet must be returned by February 1. Congrats Aiden for earning your free ticket to Six Flags!
  • Thank you Aiden and family for sending in Box Tops! Moreau Heights collects Box Tops, Labels for Education, My Coke Rewards, and more. We appreciate your help!
  • Please make sure your child brings a jacket or coat on cold days; and gloves, mittens, hats, etc. are welcome as well. Please try to label your child's belongings so that in the event they get misplaced, they can find their way back to you. We have outdoor recess unless it is raining/snowing or the temperature is below 20 degrees.
