Brought to you by the Shepard Elementary PTA
From our Principal
Dear Shepard Families,
First off, I want to thank the Shepard PTA and Parent Volunteers for an AMAZING Monster Mash. It was a great evening of family fun! My son Harry kept asking if we could go back the next day!
I’m going to reuse an old topic (well, old to me) in my note to y’all this week because it came up in conversation recently and I think y’all will appreciate it.
As you have probably heard, our teachers are spending a lot of time this year learning and collaborating about Social Emotional Learning. Each day, your child's class spends a few minutes in a class meeting discussing their feelings and what's important as we grow up together. I was talking with a parent last week, and we started talking about how sometimes the kids seem to have apps running in the background when they come to school. You know how your smartphone can have apps open and running in the background? An app you don't close completely after using it? And you know what happens when you don't close those apps? Right, It DRAINS your battery.
Sometimes when our kids come to school, they still have an open app running in the background. A fight with a brother or sister, a sad memory of a lost loved one, a struggle with soccer/homework/those legos they can’t get right! Our class meetings are designed to help kids learn how to resolve and close those apps so they don't drain their batteries.
As a parent and an educator, I love that the teachers have embraced these ideas and are dedicating their time to helping the kids understand how to express and manage their emotions, set goals, and build relationships. We've already had some amazing moments as the kids have discovered new friendships through their class meetings. I hope they will share these with you at home.
Sincerely,
Kristin

Texas PTA Reflections Program
The Shepard PTA encourages your children to participate in the Texas PTA Reflections Program this year. REFLECT ON THE THEME, CREATE AN ORIGINAL WORK OF ART, AND BE RECOGNIZED!
Engaging in the Arts not only promotes creativity, but it also strengthens critical thinking and cognitive skills! The theme for this year is “Within Reach.” The students may use their imagination to create a film, song, artwork, photograph, poem, short story, or dance routine.
Click here for Shepard PTA rules.
All original artwork is due on Thursday, November 2.
For complete rules and the official entry form, see http://www.txpta.org/programs/reflections/.
We hope to see many representations of Shepard's creative spirit in November!
