The True Cole Matthews
The Small Changes In Cole that Will Change Him Forever
Who Cole Is
Cole Matthews is a fifteen year old juvenile delinquent. Cole is from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He went to a abandoned Alaskan island for smashing Peter Driscal's head on a sidewalk. On page 7 it states," By then Peter was covering on the blood- smeared sidewalk, sobbing. Sole laughed and spit at him even as he was held back. This quote shows that Cole is not a good person and has no respect. This first time he went to the island, he burnt his shelter and tried to run away. But, ironically he got mauled by a bear, pecked by seagulls, and suffered for food. At one point, his parole officer found him and took him back to the island. This visit changed Cole significantly and now he is a much better person. On page 237 it states,"The dances, carving the totem, carrying the ancestor rock, touching the Spirit Bear, it was all the same thing-it was finding out who I really was." This quote shows how Cole changed from the beginning to the end.
The Three Things That Helped Cole Change Who is
When Cole was on the abandoned island he had met a Spirit Spear. The bear had mauled Cole, but later on he touched the Spirit Bear, which played a big role of changing who Cole is. Touching the bear changed Cole because the bear showed calmness and it's innocence. On page 93 it states," Still eyeing Cole, the Spirit Bear casually licked up the spit, raised it's head, eyes mild and curious, then turned and sauntered away." Another piece of nature that helped change Cole is the pond. Every single morning Cole would soak in the pond and it made him feel calm. The final piece of nature that Cole interacted with was the "ancestor rock". Like the pond, Cole walked up a hill, bringing the "ancestor rock", and then he would roll the rock down to "release his anger".
How the Spirit Bear, Pond, and Rock Helped Change Cole
The Spirit Bear, pond, and the "Ancestor Rock" influenced Cole in a great way. Cole said that these things changed who he is. On page 237 Cole says," The dances, carving the totem, carrying the ancestor rock, touching the Spirit Bear, it was all the same thing- it was finding out who I really was." This quote means that Cole had truly changed because of all of these influential things.
