Welcome Back to School
I hope everyone was able to enjoy their last week of summer vacation! It was very nice to have met many of our families during the Open House last week. I am looking forward to an amazing school year!
At the start of each week, I will send home an email with a link to our weekly newsletter sharing what we are doing “This Week in Room 108.” Our newsletter will provide information about what we are learning in school, important events and reminders, as well as links to videos on Brain Pop, Jr. pertaining to what we have been learning in first grade.
Email is the best way to contact me. If you should ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Box Tops for Education
Titus Elementary collects Box Tops to raise money for our school. The total number of box tops for each class is tallied monthly. At the end of each month, the winners are announced on the morning announcements and the class with the highest total receives a certificate to display in the classroom. At the end of the school year, the class with the most Box Tops will win a Rita’s Water Ice Party!
In School this Week...
The Word Wall is a great writing tool in our classroom. I do not expect the students to memorize each word wall word, but they do need to be aware that the words are on the wall, so they can use them as a reference when writing in the classroom. For the first few weeks of school, we will be reviewing the word wall words the students learned in Kindergarten.
This week's word wall words are:
and, is, like, me, can, I, the, you, see, will
In reading this week, we are reading the story Crabby Cat Goes Shopping. While reading this story we will identify the characters and setting. We will discuss how to take care of books and learn about the routines for our classroom library.
In math this week, we will learn the routines for our classroom jobs, practice counting on a number line by playing the game Monster Squeeze, and will identify shapes and patterns using our pattern block templates.
This week we will write about what we did during our summer vacation. The students will complete the sentence starter: “I went...” We will also write about and illustrate things we enjoyed during recess and lunch.
In the Computer Lab...
The Titus Home and School association has purchased a one year license for BrainPOP, which is a very interactive online source for virtually every subject and topic associated with our elementary curriculum. We are now able to access BrainPOP, BrainPOPjr, and BrainPOP Español for both home and school.
In First Grade, we use the BrainPOPjr site at http://www.brainpopjr.com/ several times a week. Please visit the site with your children at home and encourage them to tell you about the activities we've completed in school.
Here are some videos pertaining to what we have been learning recently in first grade:
Check the Computer Lab Links page on our classroom website to find more fun learning games your child can practice at home.
