- Bats can't see very well, but they can use their sense of smell and hearing to find their way. Bats use echolocation to find food. They use echoes or sound, instead of their eyes, to find their way. They help the environment by eating pesky insects. Their special features make bats unique.

Have you ever wondered how many bats there are? Well, I have the answer. There are more than a 1,000 kinds of bats. You would think a bat is a bird. NO, a bat is a mammal! A bat is the only mammal that can fly.

BABY BATS
Baby bats are called pups. The adult bat usually only has one or two babies at a time. It has to be warm outside to have their babies. They need to be near a good food supply and cave before they have their babies. This will keep them fed and protected.
Do you know bats have predators?
Bats have many natural predators. Four enemies of bats are hawks, owls, raccoons, and snakes. Not only animals are predators to bats, but floods are too. Floods can also drown the bats when they are hanging in the caves. Bats have to protect themselves from predators by showing their teeth, using their echo, and getting out of the cave before the flood comes.
Bats emerge from the Bracken Cave every Spring to feed on insects. Bats like to live in cold dark places. They hang upside down when they sleep.
