Social-Emotional Learning Tip of the Week:

Positive Affirmations:

As we slow down, breathe deeply, relax, and become more aware of our thoughts and feelings, we can also learn to take charge of our thoughts in ways that can help us improve our performance. Research tell us that our thoughts are as real to the brain as what’s happening in our outer lives. This is one reason why positive affirmations can be so effective. Affirmations work best when you:

  • use the present tense and the first person (as in, “I am calm now”)
  • frame them in the positive (instead of “I’m not going to fail this time,” try “I’ve got this”)
  • speak them as if they are fact and truth (no mights, shoulds, or coulds)
  • repeat them confidently to yourself multiple times a day, especially before going to sleep or right before a test

You can reinforce positive affirmations with physical touch. Tap the back of your hand, gently rub your arm, or apply pressure to your temples as you state your affirmation. Consider positive affirmations that have four syllables (e.g. “I can do this,” “I am ready,” “I am calm now,” etc.) so that you can squeeze your thumb and fingers together one syllable at a time, from your index finger, through your pinky, several times over.

Unique Job of the Week

Title: Sonographer | Diagnostic Medical Sonographers

Salary: $74,320/year

Education: 2-year associate's degree

Summary: Sonographers function as healthcare providers who, working under the delegated authority of the supervising physician, serve as a medical imaging professional providing clinically relevant information to assist the physician with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Medical sonographers play an important role in non-invasive diagnostics. Many patients are opting for these imaging procedures - which use non-ionizing, high frequency sound waves to create an image - when it can be used in place of exploratory surgery or imaging that uses radiation.

The most common use for sonography is to look at an unborn babies in prenatal care, but medical sonographers can also specialize in imaging the abdomen, brain, and other parts of the body. Typical duties include preparing patients, explaining the exam, performing the procedure and reporting the findings to the patient or a physician. Most medical sonographers work in a hospital setting, and are required to stand or walk for long periods of time. They also may be called upon for heavy lifting if a patient requires positioning assistance before or during a procedure.

Medical sonographers need the ability to explain technical procedures in a simple, clear way to patients who may be nervous about the procedure or its outcome. Sonographers also need sharp attention and good eye sight (or corrective lens) to ensure they can read and interpret images accurately. Tasks include:

  • Observe screen during scan to ensure that image produced is satisfactory for diagnostic purposes, making adjustments to equipment as required.
  • Observe and care for patients throughout examinations to ensure their safety and comfort.
  • Provide sonogram and oral or written summary of technical findings to physician for use in medical diagnosis.
  • Select appropriate equipment settings and adjust patient positions to obtain the best sites and angles.
  • Operate ultrasound equipment to produce and record images of the motion, shape, and composition of blood, organs, tissues, or bodily masses, such as fluid accumulations.
