Pershing K-8 Library Loop
October 2021
October Reading Incentive
Students who read at least three chapter books during the first three weeks of October can fill in a sheet telling us how each one was a trick and a treat. Elementary students who complete a sheet will be invited to a spooky story time on Friday, October 29, and middle school students who complete a sheet will be invited to one of four spooky story times during the last week of October, at 5-Star time.
Students can download and print a copy of the sheet or pick it up from their ELA teachers or the library. Invitations will be sent out by Friday, October 22.
Thanks to Ms. Lamkin for decorating our Horror sections!
September's Learning
Last month, Pershing students focused on being able to access materials in the library more easily. Here is the month in review:
Elementary Focus: Finding Books & Checking Out
Last month was spent getting younger students settled into a library routine and getting older students' memories refreshed on finding materials.
Checkout Protocol
K-1 students got stickers as rewards for remembering to bring back their library books. Mrs. Steineke's class got extra free reading time as a special reward when ALL of the class remembered to bring back their books!
From OPAC to Shelf
Fourth and Fifth graders practiced finding a book in the online catalog that they wanted to read, then using the call number to find the book. Their prize for success was an extra checkout.
Finding Books by Address
Second and Third graders practiced finding books by "shelving" cards with an address on them. Once students succeeded, they got scratch-n-sniff bookmarks as a prize.
Middle School Focus: Accessing eBooks & Digital Audiobooks
ELA students grades 6-8 took time last month to learn the easiest way to access our digital materials. In case they forgot what was discussed during their library times, there is a short video available to refresh their memories. Many teachers posted the video on their Canvas pages, and you can find it below.
Accessing Pershing's Digital Materials
Fall Book Fair a BIG Success!
During the course of our first book fair of the year, we raised over $1600 in Scholastic Bucks that can be used to purchase more books for our library! We were able to spend about $600 of those Bucks by just pulling popular, hard-bound titles right from the book fair.
The book fair was pet themed, so we had students vote with their change for which pet was better: dogs or cats. Dogs won...by a whisker.
Library Map Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the Library Map drawing! Five middle school students won gift certificates to our September Book Fair for completing a map of the library and marking an X where one of their favorite books would be found in Pershing's library.
