Introduction from Michigan State President-Elect: Moria Brady
The smell of chlorine, sauna-like heat, and shrieks of laughter are my very first C.A.R. memory. As a new member at seven years old, I attended my first state board meeting at the Splash Village in Frankenmuth. C.A.R. has gifted me with too many memories to count from exploring a battleship to being on a war truck. I’m so excited to help create memories such as these for Michigan C.A.R. members! I am pleased to be elected as your M.S.C.A.R. State President and am so thankful to Mrs. Deb Davis, my senior, for helping me grow in our third consecutive year together.
M.S.C.A.R. 2020-2021 Overview
We have several objectives and goals for this term. This year we would like to increase membership in the state-society by 3%, as well as have fun! We have events scheduled for in-person, but we are prepared to adapt if needed. I want to visit every Michigan society. We know times are different due to COVID 19. We encourage societies to have virtual meetings if they have the capability or plan to meet face-to-face when it is available. Please invite Mrs. Davis and me to either setting. We have a special gift for each society: a forget them not kit (comprised of a missing man table display and the book America's Table) to utilize in supporting the state project.
It is an honor to share the M.S.C.A.R. 2020-2021 state project: Forget-Them-Not. This year's state project is raising awareness of over 600,000 POW/MIA from all American conflicts, and create a permanent marker at one of the National Cemeteries in Michigan. Likewise, raise funds to refurbish the Eternal Flame monument in Novi. If you would like to support this state project, you can visit our website: carmichigan.org or contact my senior Mrs. Deb Davis or me. Thank you all for your eagerness to kick off the 2020-2021 term!

Hello everyone!
I hope all is well with you and your loved ones are safe.
In the absence of the annual National Convention in April, the Senior National Board of Management held an electronic meeting. Members were asked to vote on several topics to include: a virtual National Convention, virtual elections, and the reports, that would have been given at April’s National Convention, will need to be mailed by June 15th to headquarters. Also, the Board voted to cancel this year’s Regionals. Approval was given for the members (i.e. national officers) to develop an online educational program for the summer to take the place of the regional meetings. June 6th at 3:00 PM is the next SNBOM meeting. At this meeting the Senior National President, State Presidents and Senior State Presidents will be confirmed. There was thought to have local societies reappoint delegates to the National Convention, which will be held virtually on a July weekend. Finally, provisions for a written Oath of Office sent to National Headquarters was discussed. More details are forthcoming.
The Society By Laws committee has finished the revisions. The Seniors will need to vote for the new By Laws. We are required to have them published 30 days before voting. Look for them through email this Fall.
Our State President kicked off her state project with a roaringly successful Face Book Live presentation. A first for the Society! If you missed it, check out the video on the Society’s FB page. While on the computer stop into the newly revised Michigan Society Children of the American Revolution website, www.carmichigan.org .
The 2020-2021 State Directory is being assembled. Once published, kindly review any information pertinent to you. Let us know if corrections need to be made, especially with the emails.
Inquiries and or comments about M.S.C.A.R. can always be sent to the Society’s gmail account: carmichigansociety@gmail.com
Looking forward to a wonderful, yet extraordinary year,
Deb Davis

May 2, 2020, saw the M.S.C.A.R.'s first electronic get together. State President-elect Moria and Sr. State President-Elect Mrs. Davis invited all officers, committee chairs, and senior society presidents to join in an informational and FUN gathering. This event, attended by almost 30 people, was the first of many to support one of the primary objectives for 2020-2021: have fun! The group learned about the goals, objectives, theme, and project for the upcoming term. Those assembled played trivia and had a scavenger hunt. Expect more fun virtual activities to happen in the next few months; ALL Michigan C.A.R. members and seniors are welcome to participate!

Anna Joy Harris; State Organizing Secretary
Hi! I am 10 years old and in the 4th grade. I live in Canton and I belong to the Fort Dearborn Society. I have a younger sister who is 8 and her name is Ellie.
I love to dance and have been dancing for the last 5 years. I compete in jazz, lyrical, hip hop, production and solo. My favorite memory in C.A.R. is when I was little, and my cousin Morgan and I were paging. I was so afraid to walk in and go down the aisle that she said to me, “It’s okay”. I love the dance party at State Conference and being with all the kids!
Jeremy Mathieu; State 2nd Vice President
I, Jeremy Mathieu 2nd VP, have been in C.A.R. for 3 years and some of my best memories are making new friends and doing activities with them.
My first conference was in 2018 and that is when I met my friends. My first year we went to Zapzone and my friends and I teamed up.
In my own society, Lt. Isiah Fuller, I have made friends as well. My society has gone on adventures and has done some projects such as cleaning up a nearby beach, picked up garbage at a park, and made a Lego stop motion of the capture of Fort Ticonderoga.
Morgan Brooke Hughes; State Librarian/Curator
I am 10 years old and in the 4th grade. I live in Dearborn and belong to the Fort Dearborn Society. I have 2 younger sisters, Molly just turned 7 and Maisy is almost 4.
I love to read, draw, ride my bike, swim, camp and play on the computer. I also love going to C.A.R. State Conference and Regionals! I love hanging out with my cousins and new friends that I make. I look forward to cashing in all the bottles and cans we are collecting to raise money for Moria Brady’s State Project.

FORT DEARBORN SOCIETY - Dearborn - Organized 1998
Hello Friends!
This has been a different and strange time for us. I hope everyone is doing good while having to stay at home. Our Society has not met together because of the Covid 19 virus but we do hope that we can get together sometime this summer.
We are excited for this new C.A.R. year, and we are ready to support Moria as our State President! Our fundraiser this year is collecting cans and bottles again because we did so good at it last year! We are also making fire starters with all the toilet paper rolls that people now have! We are selling them to all our friends and families who like to camp, or who have a fire pit in their yard.
Stay healthy friends!
In C.A.R. service and friendship,
Ellie Kate Harris, President; Fort Dearborn Society

MARK AND HENRY SCHELL - North Branch - Organized 2013
As a Conservation project Mark and Henry Schell Society joined in a Bird Count Day with Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Members were given a kit of bird seed, gelatin, hanging string and a cookie cutter to make bird seed cakes to hang in the trees, on patios and fence posts. Each day of the week identification pages with photos of nests, eggs and birds were emailed to members. The pages contained special information about each bird, what color they are, how to find them or what they sound like. Blue Jays call “Thief, Thief” but they also try to talk like people or sound like other animals. Cardinals have a bright colored dad and a plainer colored mom so she can hide on her nest. Blue Birds have blue eggs and fluffy blue babies and Goldfinches change color for the winter. Turkey Vultures clean dead animals from our fields and roadsides and Crows take other bird’s eggs. Swallows swoop and dive in the air catching insects or playing with feathers and Robins sit in the tree top singing “Cheeriyo, Cheeriyo, Cheery, Cheery, Cheeryio”.
Members had an exciting week making bird seed cakes and learning about the birds around their homes. It will be fun when we can get together and talk about the birds each member saw and what they liked about the project.

LEWIS CASS SOCIETY - Bay City - Organized 1913
Lewis Cass Society was happy to be recognized as the outstanding state society at the M.S.C.A.R. State Conference in February. We were incredibly pleased to host two Vietnam Veterans and their spouses at the state conference banquet.
In March, we assisted The John Alden chapter with their annual scrapbook event. This was our last public event before the stay home stay safe order.
In April, we had a society meeting via Facebook messenger and celebrated the 125th birthday of the N.S.C.A.R. with a virtual birthday party.
In May, we were happy to accept the Lt. Isaiah Fuller Society invitation and participate in the birthday parade for Mr. Krupa, a WW2 veteran who turned 105.
We are adapting our calendar of society events to keep all our member families safe and still engaged.
JOHN PAUL JONES SOCIETY - Detroit - Organized 1897
The John Paul Jones Society M.S.C.A.R. is the oldest C.A.R. society in Michigan. In the new year starting in 2020, we have attended virtual seminars about women’s suffrage, the meaning behind Michigan’s flag, and we have attended a virtual M.S.C.A.R. meeting about this years project.
Fiona has started organizing old records and newspaper clippings of activities that the John Paul Jones society has done in the past to make a project on the history of the society and when it is safe to do so, a meeting will be held to finish making the project and to present what we have learned about our past to our fellow DAR chapter.
Pictured Below: State President-Elect Moria Brady was able to visit with the John Paul Jones Society and give them their "Forget Them Not" kit.
Lt. ISAIAH FULLER - Mt. Clemens - Organized 2004
The Lt Isaiah Fuller Society is off with a bang...as much as we can be. We have 2 applications waiting to be signed and were the co-hosts of a drive by parade celebrating Walter Krupa, a WW2 veteran who celebrated his 105th birthday on May 9th. We made posters, decorated cars with window chalk and helped line up over 50 cars to parade by his home. We will be having our first Zoom meeting before you receive this newsletter and are looking forward to meeting in person again.

I am Madden Brady, Honorary State President, State Director and our current Merit Chair. I am looking forward to working with Mrs. Laurie Huber once again as our state's Merit Chairman; for those who may not know, Mrs. Huber was my Senior when I was the M.S.C.A.R. State President.
Though our National society has not developed a new merit packet, when they do I will make sure you all are informed! Until then, this Merit Chair recommends that you submit your best ideas on how to honor POW/MIA in these changing times.

M.S.C.A.R. 87th State Conference
By Alice Kraatz, Honorary State President
The Michigan Society’s 87th annual conference was packed with opportunities “To Honor, To Remember” as we built on the “Foundations of Freedom.” Members wrote cards and letters for Honor Flight mail call as they gathered for pizza and the Friday night board meeting, which was followed by a party at Zap Zone (laser tag, trampolines, mini-golf, bumper cars, and arcade games). The reports of officers and chairs at the business meeting shared the impact that C.A.R. has had in Michigan over the last year, as well as the many ways that members have expanded their leadership skills. The afternoon field trip had four components:
- A symbolic check presentation on the steps of the State Capitol of the money raised so far (over $40,000) “To Honor, To Remember” Vietnam veterans by sending them on a special Honor Flight.
- A guided tour of Michigan’s historic State Capitol
- “Color Guard 101” – a workshop presented by the Michigan SAR Color Guard
- A private behind-the-scenes tour of the battle flag collection at the Michigan Historical Museum, highlighting the Civil War flag of the 10th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, which was restored and preserved as the 1993-1994 C.A.R. State Project. We were joined by Shannon Emery Smith, who led that project as the Michigan C.A.R. State President.
A birthday party theme was chosen because the banquet was took place on George Washington’s birthday, and to honor the upcoming 125th birthday of the National C.A.R. Society. The sight and sound of members (and seniors!) in birthday hats with noisemakers added to the celebratory mood of the occasion. Several Vietnam veterans were our honored guests; National President Mackie Storage and the Vice President for the Great Lakes Region Jacob Shadinger helped to recognize each one with the presentation of individualized plaques and certificates, and the commemorative lapel pin for those who had not yet received theirs. The banquet concluded with a surprise announcement that a matching grant has been awarded to help us reach our goal of fully funding a special Michigan C.A.R. Honor Flight for Michigan’s Vietnam veterans. The grand march and dance were a perfect conclusion to a very memorable annual conference. For many members, this was their first State conference. After having so much fun with new friends from across the State, we are sure it won’t be their last

First State Conference Memories from Stoney Creek Vice Regent Nancy Flasck
In wanting to learn more about the C.A.R., more specifically the Elias Cady Society, with Stoney Creek being one of their supporters, I dove in. I did not know what to expect, so I volunteered to assist Deb Rakoczy in any aspect I could be helpful. “Here to serve”, is my motto these days as it seems appropriate with the group. I would be helping and this is the best way to learn what this or any organization is about. So Friday I arrived, boots on the ground and the adventure began. The two days were full of learning, laughing and even a bit of heartfelt crying. Good tears mind you. I have so much respect for these young women and men. They are learning to be good citizens of our state and country, reminding me several times throughout the conference why I love the DAR so much and they showed me that anyone can learn our history while preserving it. The kids are all so enthusiastic, yes there was some twirling and spinning at moments, seeing through their passionate eyes, their eagerness to do, to serve, to learn and share, made my heart swell with pride.
I explained to an associate of mine, the M.S.C.A.R. State Conference is like a mini-version of our NSDAR State Conference. They are modeling us, they are also reminding us with their determination to serve, to remember why we are supporting our Veterans and what they sacrificed for us. I have to say that I was revitalized in my own attitude just by being around the kids. They are our future and I am so proud to even have had the opportunity to spend this time with them and just assist. I guess you could say that when I grow up, I want to be just like them.
Proud to be a member of the Stony Creek Chapter, NSDAR and to support the Elias Cady Society C.A.R.
I challenge all chapters and members to get involved and be a part of their story – the C.A.R. story – as they write it.
Sincerely,
Nancy H Flasck

- Even small contributions make a big difference.
- An Endowment is more than a bank account. It's every investment made to C.A.R., through time, mentorship, volunteering, welcoming new members, hosting fun meetings. It is our membership, our heritage, our future, and our history.

We have totally revitalized the website with President-Elect Moria Brady, and Senior President-Elect Deb Davis. It has incorporated more about C.A.R., our local Michigan societies, a brand new donation page, and a start at a blog page. We will update at least monthly with new events. We also added a Members Only page. Visit often and share with your friends and family too. Located at www.carmichigan.org.
