The Weekly Howl
St. Francis Catholic School - Sunday, May 16th
Dear Parents & Friends of SFCS,
Last week the students were very busy as you can see from the pictures in this week's Howl. This week will be another week packed with many activities. On Monday, the 5th Grade and Mrs. Sweeney will be performing their musical, Alice in the Land of Idioms. The musical will be performed outside the Fine Arts Building. Check out the times listed below. It is going to be a great show!
Friday, May 21st will be the deadline to register for Summer Camps at SFCS. This deadline is important since it will be used by the Camp Facilitators if there are enough participants to actually host the camp. So make sure to register if you are planning to have your child(ren) participate.
Have a wonderful remainder to your weekend!
Sincerely in Christ,
Brian Pope

Prekindergarten
Kindergarten
They had a great week in kindergarten! They continue to garden with Mr. Gavin, this week they tried our snap peas. Every student tasted at least one, how wonderful! Mrs. Pennington is teaching the students to play hockey in PE and many are loving it. It is so exciting to watch them celebrate after getting a goal! In Music, Mrs. Sweeney taught the students all about idioms in preparation for the play next week. They took that lesson to the classroom and wrote and/or illustrated some idioms of our very own. They were hilarious! The students took a trip to Fatima, Portugal where they learned about the apparitions of Our Lady. They were amazed by how much faith and strength the 3 young children drew from the Lord.
1st Grade
The first graders were very busy this week. They worked on their measurement unit in Math. The students created Gallonbot, a robot to help them remember pints, quarts, and cups. They also learned about the way the earth moves around the sun. They modeled how the earth rotates.
4th Grade
Grade Four had and amazing graphing assessment this week! Each student created their own survey question and then asked each classmate for an answer. The children took the data the information from their survey and made a Tally Chart to show their data. The Tally chart was used to make a Bar Graph. For the final step in this assessment, each child had to answer some questions about the graphs of two other students. These Fourth Graders really know about graphs!!
6th Grade Social Studies
6th Grade Science
The culminating unit for sixth grade science is astronomy. We had a lesson about the recent helicopter flights on Mars. NASA engineers explained why the helicopter needed to be designed the way it is and how it was tested before being sent to Mars. We also saw video footage of the recent history making Mars helicopter flight and were even able to hear the noise made by the rotor blades as well as the Martian wind. Our first project is to determine the effects of design changes on a helicopter’s flight. I think we have some very focused engineers in the making!
Coach's Corner
Attention volleyball players…Coach Taylor will be offering Voluntary workouts one more time before summer break this upcoming Friday from 3:15-5pm. All players must have a current physical on file. With some new equipment and new jerseys purchased for the senior team, volleyball is going to be awesome this year and it’s time to get started!!
Sports’ Celebration is this week!

WHAT: A special evening to celebrate all our school teams, student-athletes and coaches including a slideshow picture montage and coaches’ award presentations.
