Strings at Hoboken MS
Ms. Monblatt's HMS students had a wonderful week of string class! Students were actively engaged in partner play while continuing to work on pieces including a challenging arrangement of "Sweet Child Of Mine" and the traditional Folk song, "Ashokan Farewell".
Students worked with peers to practice reading bowings, before implementing them into their practice! This added component of reading music helps the ensemble to play in a more cohesive way, and to sound even more dynamic! Bravo to all of these outstanding students for all of their hard work!
Music at Wallace School
Our band and chorus students are starting to diligently prepare for the upcoming spring concerts and events. Our main spring concert is on June 9th at 7PM. We have summer band offered through the LEAP program as well.
Please register here: https://ptl.regfox.com/2023-leap-summer-camp-grades-3-5-new
It’s a great opportunity to receive private and small group instrumental lessons in preparation for the new school year. Both beginners and skilled students are welcome in this program. Hope to see our music students there!
Music at Connors School
In Ms. Pokorny’s class students added up note values to find the correct space on the coloring sheet and made their fun spring time pictures. Remembering note values is so important in music.
This skill empowers the students when it comes time to play the recorder and other instruments in the Connors Band. The more confident they feel knowing the various note values the easier it is to perform on the various band instruments. Here is Macie showing off her fun bunny and egg coloring sheet.
In Ms. Klag’s class we had some treble clef April showers. The students filled in the notes on the treble clef without making a mistake. Along with note values the first grade students are mastering the note placements on the treble clef. Some of you may remember Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge and our students definitely learned that this week. Here is Haley with her raindrops all filled in.
Music at Brandt School
Our 5th grade students had the opportunity to research some of their favorite musical artists for their Music in Our Schools Month presentations. Some of these artists include Rihanna, Dierks Bentley, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce.
These artists have made a huge contribution to culture with their music and their style. In addition, their songs are recognizable which makes them more appealing especially to our students who have different tastes in music.

Keanu Brueggemann, a student at Hoboken Middle School, is raising funds for the upcoming North Jersey Friendship Walk organized by Best Buddies in New Jersey. Melanie Brueggemann, Keanu's mother, spoke about how the Best Buddies club at the Middle School has been an essential part of her son's life, allowing him to socialize and form connections in a safe and enjoyable environment.
"Being understood is his biggest challenge, especially at his age. [Best Buddies] builds a bridge and spreads awareness that individuals with disabilities are not different," said Melanie Brueggemann.
Melanie also expressed her gratitude towards Hoboken Middle School, Ms. Beriloff, Ms. Moore, and Ms. Burke, for accepting Keanu as an individual and seeing his unique qualities. With less than two weeks remaining until the North Jersey Friendship Walk, Keanu is dedicated to raising funds for inclusion!

6th Grade at Hoboken MS
This week in Science, 6th graders were introduced to Newton’s three laws of motion. All three laws of motion teach us how inertia, acceleration, and action-reaction work. We learned about objects at rest not moving unless an unbalanced force is applied as well as an object in motion will continue to move until an unbalanced force is applied.
Additionally, we studied the formula for force which is acceleration multiplied by mass. Finally, we learned for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. We finished up the week with a fun scavenger hunt testing us on our knowledge of all three laws.
7th Grade at Hoboken MS
The 7th Grade Science classes learned about hydroponic and aquaponic farming and how synthetic materials can be used in creating such systems for farming. The classes also learned how other insects such as ladybugs are beneficial to use instead of pesticides when dealing with insects that will destroy crops.
The students will use this knowledge upon returning from break to create a classroom aquaponic and hydroponic system in the classroom. The students were able to identify the difference in the yields of produce gained during hydroponics than conventional farming practices. The students are looking forward to the project upon returning to school from break.
8th Grade at Hoboken MS
This week in Science we finished up our Waves Unit with our final test on Tuesday. We spent Monday’s class playing review games and studying. On Wednesday, we started our next unit: Our place in the universe! The first topic of this unit discusses our place on this earth and the growth of the human population.
On Wednesday, we looked at age structure charts and graphs illustrating the difference in population growth between more developed countries and less developed countries. We closed out this week with a personal growth day by looking at the structure of the heart and injustice.
French Class in Hoboken MS
In French class, 6th graders focused on reviewing for and taking their last quiz of Marking Period 3 on the topic of French culture and leisure activity vocabulary. 7th and 8th graders created a slide to describe themselves. They included information such as their age, birthday and a description of their personalities.
3rd Grade Wallace School
Third graders have been working very hard in ELA. Students have officially started their new core novel, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane”. They have enjoyed how the story is beginning to unfold and have made predictions of what will come next. This week, students also wrapped up their expository writing pieces. They took some time to share their work with their peers and teach their classmates something new.
During Math, students continued to work on their division fluency through minute math. They took the unit 4 math assessment and are ready to dive into fractions. This week, students also worked on fun projects and math crafts to celebrate Spring Break.
In Social Studies, students focused on Autism Awareness. They learned about autism through books and videos. To celebrate, students colored autism ribbons and huge them up to show their support.
3rd Grade at Connors School Ms. Januse, Ms. Hall, Ms. Schmidt, Ms.Criqui, Ms. Layson, Ms. Goodwin, Ms. White, and Ms. Stinson
ELA: This week, students reviewed the literary skills they have learned throughout the year and used these in order to complete their Linkit assessments. Additionally, students continued reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, and participated in Spring-related writing activities.
Social Studies: This week third graders spread kindness to their community! Students reflected upon random acts of kindness that they can perform at home, at school, and throughout the community in order to uplift others and make the world a better place. Third graders brought home a Kindness Challenge for the month of April. If all students in each class bring back the completed & signed acts of kindness challenge by Friday, April 28th, the class can earn a class reward!
3rd Grade at Brandt School
Even though we had a short week, third graders have been hard at work!
Writers continued comparing and contrasting their non-fiction writing pieces, and adding a drawing to reflect what they wrote about. Third graders continue to add details and make sure that their writing can help readers create a picture in their minds. Readers continued their study of poetry and continued their learning of figurative language such as similes and metaphors. Some poetry was even created!
As mathematicians finally wrapped up their study of geometry, third graders continued their learning about fractions and engaging in hands-on activities surrounding them. Unit fractions and parts of a whole were explored, and fractions on the number line were represented. When we return from Spring Break, mathematicians will learn more about the many ways to make a share.
4th Grade at Wallace School
ELA
Our 4th grade readers began the novel “Wonder”, written by R.J. Palacio. Though multiple narrators tell the tale, the plot centers around August “Auggie” Pullman, a 10-year-old kid who has a genetic condition that has left his face misshapen. People stare and judge him by his looks, but Auggie tries not to let it bother him. He feels like a normal kid on the inside and wishes others would get to know him for who he is. Auggie’s life is upended when he transitions from being homeschooled to attending Beecher Prep Middle School. He faces many challenges because of his appearance, as well as the routine trials of growing up.
During ELA, our 4th grade readers identified features of expository text by reading "At Your Fingertips" and “Secrets of the Ice”. Within those two stories our writers were able to use sensory details and include 2 sensory details. Students had to read the precept “ When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind” and write about what that means to them in relation to our novel “Wonder.”
Our 4th grade mathematicians continued Unit 6: Fraction Cards & Decimal Grids. Students compared and ordered fractions and justified their order through reasoning about fraction equivalencies and relationships. Students worked in groups and used fraction tiles to visually order fractions with unlike denominators. Students compared fractions to determine which is greater by ordering fractions on a number line.
Social Studies:
Our 4th grade historians continued Unit 6: How did the United States Struggle to Stay Together? During this unit, students will learn more about the struggles that the United States faced before, during, and after the Civil War. These include ways our nation dealt with slavery’s expansion, states’ rights, emancipation, and the rebuilding of the South.
This week students studied the Slavery Balancing Act. Students had to describe how the United States gained new western lands. Students used a map key to identify the free states and slave states.
4th Grade at Connors Shool Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Schulz, Ms. Goodwin, Ms. Layson and Mr. Donovan
ELA: Phenomenal 4th Graders demonstrated focus and stamina while completing the final Link It ELA benchmark assessment. They continued reading the core novel "Jim and Me," travelling back in time to the Polo Grounds and New York City in 1913. Students learned historical details about the settings and compared the rules of baseball from the past to the present. Partners analyzed a chapter for setting by identifying descriptive details, drawing a picture, and writing about how the setting was important to the story plot.
Social Studies: Phenomenal 4th Grade historians completed their study of the 13 colonies and the establishment of a nation as they presented slideshows. Students were asked to investigate, research, and use the knowledge learned throughout the unit in order to report on aspects of life during the colonial period. Students worked in small groups to report on the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies.
4th Grade at Brandt School
In Social Studies, we discussed the conflicts that the US faced after it expanded west, including those related to slavery and equal rights. We worked on a project where we became a pioneer during the Westward Expansion.
In Reading, we began to read the beloved novel, Wonder, about a boy who was born with facial differences and his journey starting a new school. In the book it discusses the precept, “When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.” We are also learning to explain how photographs, captions, and chronological order contribute to the understanding of a text.
In Writing, we began working on another Literary Analysis Task essay, where we read two literary texts that are purposely paired in order to compare and then write an analytical essay.
In Math, we’ve been working hard at fractions and decimals. Students learned how to add, subtract, and multiply fractions. They can find equivalent fractions and decimals, and can show them with models. We can also order fractions and decimals from least to greatest.
5th Grade at Wallace School
Our 5th Graders writers celebrated Poetry Month by going on a walking field trip to Sinatra Park. While at Sinatra Park, they were engaged in applying their knowledge of syllabication and poetic devices. This supported the student when they were engaged in a “haiku” poetry Lesson and drafting two haiku poems.
In Math, our 5th Graders are currently engaged in multiplying and dividing fractions by fractions and whole numbers by using visual fraction models or equations to represent reasoning.
In Social Studies, our 5th Grade Historians are currently engaged in summarizing the major battles of the Civil War and their significance by closely reading informational texts and engaging in discussion to create more battle book pages in their digital notebook.
5th Grade at Connors School Ms. Ortiz, Ms. Schultes, Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Layson and Ms. Hirniak
Math: This week in Math we were super busy. Students started off the week by taking their end of year Link It assessment. Students did a phenomenal job and I could not be any prouder of their growth. We then took our district required ECR. Students had to read an extended constructed response and had to solve multi-step fraction questions. Again, students worked hard and knocked it out of the park. We also took our unit 7 test where students had to demonstrate proficiency with multiplying fractions, metric and customary measurement. Students worked so hard this week and have truly earned a break during Spring Break.
ELA: This week fifth graders worked very hard on Link It assessments. They also continued reading Chasing Lincoln's Killer. Students are so interested in seeing what will happen next and how the events will unfold. Have a great Spring Break!
Social Studies: This week in Social Studies, students were able to choose from the Missouri Compromise, the Mexican Cession, or the Compromise of 1850 in order to create a newspaper article. They had to describe how the event related to the debate over slavery and had to create interviews that provided various perspectives. Students did such a great job creating these Newspaper Articles.
5th Grade at Brandt School
In ELA this week students dug into reading and studying the novel, Chasing Lincoln's Killer. Readers engaged in some pre-reading activities to be able to explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a text by closely reading primary sources, analyzing, and drawing inferences to accurately solve tasks and uncover the "Lost Lincoln Letter". Readers and writers drew information from multiple print or digital sources by closely reading, analyzing, and integrating information from several texts to speak about the subject knowledgeably and write a final reflection. Readers determined important information from multiple print or digital sources by closely reading, analyzing, and integrating information from the prologue to speak about the subject knowledgeably and answer text-dependent questions.
In Math, mathematicians used what they know about the meaning of decimals and fraction-decimal equivalents to order decimals using one, tenth, or hundredth and to write decimals in expanded form. Students engaged in a new game called Smaller to Larger ordering the decimals from smallest to largest.
In Social Studies, Historians evaluated the goals and accomplishments of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, Freedmen’s Bureau, and Universities (Fisk, Lincoln, Cheyney, etc.) by closely reading informational texts and engaging in discussion to explain how these initiatives supported previously enslaved people.
Physical Education at Brandt School
Physical Education continued to exercise as we did last week. Students in grades K-3 participated in mindfulness yoga activities, continued to explore space, and learned to control their movements. In their yoga practice, students flowed in the theme of either Moana, Harry Potter, or the spring season.
Students in grades 4-5 completed their 3rd and final fitness test assessment period of the school year and engaged in a Connect 4 Basketball activity, bringing the classic board game to reality and providing a sneak peek of a theme on an upcoming unit coming soon.
Storm Drain Murals
The Hoboken Public School District and the Hoboken Green Team are partnering to refresh the storm drain murals painted throughout Hoboken in 2020.
Four district schools: Wallace, Connors, Brandt, and Hoboken Middle School will participate. Each school will embark on an Earth Day unit where they will discuss pollution, sea life, and how what gets thrown into our storm drain impacts life in our Hudson River and beyond.
By turning storm drains into attention-grabbing pieces of artwork, the Hoboken Green Team aims to raise awareness of the harmful effects of litter, gasoline, oil, grass clippings, road salt, and other types of pollution on our waterways. It is important that local citizens realize these pollutants are generated by everyday human activities, and can be carried by rain and snowmelt to storm drains.
Students from throughout the district have already begun working on their projects.

Early Childhood Education Highlights
The ECE Team #HereWeComeHoboken
Preschool at Jubilee
This week in Jubilee 100, students used their creativity and enjoyed creating tie-dye shirts with the colors red and teal. Students used different hand motions to squirt dye onto white shirts and watched the colors mix to create a different color.
Students also joined in on the letter P show and tell where they described and told their classmates what different objects start with the letter P.
Preschool at Connors School
Ms. Sophia's class in Connors 006 has had a busy week!
As the students have been participating in "Restaurant" theme activities, the class visited Napoli's Pizza Shop and had a great experience dining all together in this neighborhood restaurant. Students especially enjoyed watching the pizza chef making the pizza and then of course savoring every bite of that delicious pizza.
The class also had the opportunity earlier in the week to visit the Firehouse and go on an actual Fire Truck to learn all about fire safety precautions.
Preschool at Calabro School
The Scientists in Calabro Room 200 are observing the life cycle of butterflies first hand this Spring. They look, read, draw, measure, and record facts and observations about their very own classroom caterpillars. The class has watched them grow and made a connection to the caterpillar (who got really, really big) in Eric Carle’s beloved book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. During Science Eyes the students observe and draw what they see.
During play time they have fun naming the classroom caterpillars. At the art center the class draws what they imagine the future butterflies to look like. Did you know that butterfly’s wings have symmetrical patterns of colors? Not only did they measure the caterpillars but the students learned that new word “symmetry.” Whenever they sing the song “Mariposa”, the students recall all they have been learning about the butterfly.
Preschool at Brandt School
The students in Ms. Lyuda’s and Ms. Yolanda’s room have been having a lot of fun. They have been working on venger drawings and even had a fun trip!
Venger Drawing is a creative exercise designed to promote a diversity of ideas. Children discuss ideas about what object, part of an object a geometric shape could compose, and then the children represent their own ideas in a drawing.
Last week the class extended their Venger drawing activity and joined the Our Neighborhood: Shapes and Patterns Educational Program at the Hoboken Historical Museum. The students looked for shapes and patterns that can be found in buildings throughout the city and right outside their doors.
The class explored neighborhood architecture with their eyes and then they went inside to create a community mural based on the design elements of shapes, lines, and patterns. The class is full of an amazing team of architects who are ready to design new playgrounds, pools, gardens, and parks in Hoboken!
Preschool at 770 Jackson
Illustrator, illustrator, what do you do? What does a great illustrator do? Jackson 108 has been contemplating this question for a while now and are always open to adding new points of view!
After comparing two illustrations and pointing out some differences the students noticed between the two (adding detail, matching illustrations to words, taking your time) , the class read a story called “This is a Ball”. If you’ve ever read this story before, you know that the illustrations do NOT match the words! After some good laughs, the students extended the story by drawing their best illustrations and writing out a sentence that did not match what they drew. It was fun switching it up and looking at things in a different way!
Wallace Preschool Wildcats
Ms. Nicole’s Class has been learning all about the new season of Spring! Students learned about the types of animals they see in spring and the changes in weather (lion and lamb weather). The students used language and fine motor skills to create watercolor hot air balloons and used forks to create spring tulips. They are also learning about spring vocabulary and counting spring flowers. For Language Arts the class read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle which allowed them to reinforce counting, calendar, and sequencing skills.
