Lowell Leopard News
January 2023
From the Principal
Happy New Year, Lowell families! I hope you had a fun, safe, and healthy winter break, along with any holiday celebrations you may have observed. I love January because it’s a fresh start! It’s great to have a chance to think about changes we want to make. This is a great topic to discuss with your children at home as they think about coming back to school on Jan. 3!
As we return from winter break each year, we take time to review our classroom and schoolwide behavior expectations. These are based on our school motto, which you can see below: "I work hard. I show respect. I make good choices. I am a Lowell Leopard!" During the first week or so of January, your child will review expectations in at least one area of our school each day. You can support by asking them to share what they know with you at home.
January is a great time to review your family’s Internet safety plans and expectations. A common topic in the news is how students’ social media use can impact their time at school and their relationships with friends. While the majority of elementary students aren’t active on social media, it’s important that they build understanding and skills at an early age to stay safe online, and that families support with this. So, if you are looking for a resource to support this, check out Common Sense Media -- then hover over "Parent Tips and FAQs" to choose a topic.
Have a great month, and please be sure to reach out with any questions or needs!

S.T.E.A.M. with Ms. McHargue & Ms. Johnson: For January, students in all grade levels will be working on coding. We will be starting the month with online coding activities from the code.org CS fundamentals curriculum. Toward the end of January, we will be moving into working with robots. Kindergarten, first, and second graders will be working with simple robots including coding mice. Third, fourth, and fifth graders will be working with Dash and Dot robots as well as Lego WeDo robots.
Apex fun run: We had a great time partnering with Apex for our first fun run, which raised over $12,000 for our PTA to directly benefit students, families, and staff! Students enjoyed daily mini-lessons on leadership as well as the final run. Ask you child to tell you about the lessons, which spell FACTOR -- Fearless, Adapt, Care, Talk 'em up, Original, and Realize. Check out the attached fact sheet for more stats on the program.
PTA calendar: Please see the attached calendar for PTA events coming up this year! You can join PTA here -- it's a fabulous way to support Lowell students and staff!
Watch D.O.G.S.: Consider signing up to be a Watch D.O.G.S. volunteer here. This is a great way to be involved in our school. Though this program was originally created to encourage dads and other father figures to get involved, we'll take anyone! For questions, e-mail Amber McPartland at amcpartland@everettsd.org.
Health insurance: Community Health Plan of Washington’s Apple Health offers many benefits -- check out the attachment, which lists them in both English and Spanish. More info is available here.
