The Legend of the Poinsettia

Do you know how the poinsettia originally got it's name? This flower received its name from Dr. Joel Robert Poinsetta, who was a member of the South Carolina legislature and the United States House of Representatives, the first United States Minister to Mexico (the United States did not appoint ambassadors until 1896), a U.S. Secretary of War under Martin Van Buren, and a cofounder of the National Institute for the Promotion of Science and the Useful Arts (a predecessor of the Smithsonian Institution), as well as the eponym of Poinsett County, Arkansas; Poinsett Highway, Poinsett Bridge, and Poinsett State Park in South Carolina; Lake Poinsett in South Dakota; and the poinsettia, a popular Christmas plant.

When he was the minister in Mexico from 1825 to 1830, he saw this lovely plant and brought it back with him to the US. The plant was named for him!

Environmental Sciences in Action

A HUGE Shout out to Ms. Doremus for putting up the Environmental Sciences in Action bulletin board on the second grade hall. You exceeded my expectations and I am so pleased with how it turned out! Thank you my friend for always being there to help me in a jam!

Please feel free to add to the board when your class is doing neat things!

Coming soon.... Environmental Science Fair, January 8, 2015!

Please stop by the lab to see the Trout! Kindergarteners are Ichthyologists!

MSAP Compliance Audit is scheduled!

Members from the US State Department of Education will be coming to our district on January 26th, 2015. They will be visiting DFES...Academy of Environmental Sciences on Wednesday, January 28th from 8:00am to 11:30am. This is all part of our grant. The DOE wants to see that the money they have given us is being used to improve student achievement and to support our theme throughout our school,

You will see them walking the halls and touring our wonderful school. They may stop and ask you or your students some questions about the magnet program and what the students are learning. No teacher or student will be asked to meet for a formal interview but be prepared if they do stop you in the hall.

Our hallways look great with student work and I hope that you will continue to put student work up in the hallways. I know this is about six weeks away but I wanted to give you plenty of notice. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask myself, Mr. Scott, or Mrs. Umberger. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have!

Happy Holidays to you all! ( a little ryhme from a poet)

As we come to a close on this fabulous year!

May we all be reminded of memories we hold dear!

Enjoy your time off,

Recharge your battery

For when we return,

It's the kiddos that matter-y

Know that each one of you is unique

Your dedication is clear

We appreciate your alliances
